INFORMATION ON PEI ( PLEASE )

Hi their could anyone give me some advise and information on PEI I have read and looked into a lot of information but need some real on hand experience from someone who knows!!!

I have looked at the winters are they really that BAD  people say that
things close down for the winter when does winter start and finish? I take it that its the seasonal places ie tourist shops etc that close but every day living stays open. Are the people on PEI hard to get to know and not want to get to know you some say yes some say their are lovely.

Is PEI a good place to live and settle so confuesd by what i've read on different sites

A BIG THANKS to anyone who can HELP :)
Sarah

It would depend of the line of work you are looking for as to whether it could be a successful move IMHO. Its a beautiful place to visit, but the industries are fairly limited.

what are you looking to do?

There are times when the Confederation Bridge closes and you can't get on or leave PEI, doesn't happen often but does happen. Things do close in the winter months but you are still able to buy normal day to day stuff. If you plan on taking trips off the Island it costs about $43. Spent just over 2 winters here in NS (not far from PEI) and each one has been different but think you are looking at roughly Oct when things start closing down and probably won't reopen until May-ish as a rough guide

Hi, I'm a newcomer to this site and have found a wealth of info on places, but there is not a huge amount on PEI and what there is.. seems quite a mixed bag!
I am moving to Charlottetown in a few months - Visa Imminent :fingerscrossed: I went for a Recce in November and found that outside Charlottetown many places were closed down for the Winter, but in the City there was still a good choice of restaurants/bars and most were busy. Its hardly a metropolis but with a population of 60,000ish there is still plenty to do in the wintertime, life still goes on!
I know the winters there are harsh and long. In Nov when I was there the weather was no different to that of the Uk and we still managed some great walks along some beautiful but a little windswept beaches.
Currently trying research as much as poss re life in Pei in preparation for our move so would be great to hear from anyone living or moving there too. xx

Hi Nikki,

How are you settling in Nova Scotia? We have been to NS twice now back
just a couple of weeks ago we loved the scenery and the people but can't quite put my finger on it but not really found an area that felt right!! We wished we had of visited PEI at the time we have also been to NB. I know PEI is a small but we do small quite well live in a small village. But I am worried about the winters how about you??

I am a Hairdresser and I also work as a support worker my Husband is a Driving Instructor he also Drives HGV, our daughter will be going to college it is a worry that she will not find a job later in life.
Any other info on PEI would be great:)

Hi how do you find the winters? I am concerned about them:unsure:
Is that $43 just to cross the bridge? Is that the tourist bits that shut though? Sorry for all the questions :)

Winters are bad in Canada. Accept it and move on. Doesn't matter where you are, you could be in Victoria watching it rain endlessly. The Maritimes have harsh winters with the wind coming up the coast. Always seems to be obliterated by a big cloud with snow or ice coming out of it whenever I watch the Weather Network during the winter.

If you're scared of winter weather, Canada is not for you!

You can avoid snow though by living further west, which is one of the reasons I moved to Calgary. Cold I can deal with, at least you don't have to shovel it.

I have to say generally speaking I think people are paranoid about Canadian winters if they don't live here. Lot of people been living here a long time, that wouldn't be the case if you couldn't hack the winter. Yeah it's bad, but it's not a disaster movie.

What I would strongly suggest you do though is visit PEI during the winter. Visiting during the summer doesn't give you the full picture. Otherwise you will just be paranoid and worried about it. There's no way anyone can explain -25 to you, unless you want to take a kip in the freezer, you have to experience it in person.

I agree with all of the above, we had our first winter here last year and it was fine:thumbup:, you have to embrace what the winter provides with new activities and experiences that you wouldnt get in the UK, all depends how you look at it.

I dont know much more about PEI, if you are clear this is where you want to go, then my advice would be to visit in winter and really research your work situation in detail as to whether it could work for you and what the level of opportunity is going to be in PEI.

Yes, you pay that to leave PEI every time, or more if you you use the ferry, approx $65.

It is just the tourist bits being referred to in the previous post, however when this makes up a large % of what is happening it could leave quite a void.

We have visited in summer and my take aways from it were a beautiful place, great beaches,Charlottetown a nice city, with lots going on, providing you can get work could be a nice place to be around, huge potatoe farming industry and tourism- cottage rentals and camping. This is just my opinion on a short time there.

Good luck with the research, it is important to factor everything into account when deciding on where to be:thumbup:

Re: INFORMATION ON PEI ( PLEASE )

October really isn't winter as the bad weather doesn't really start until late Nov and Dec onwards. I remember going out in sweatshirt and jeans beginning of Nov with the dogs and thinking I wouldn't be doing that in the UK. Each winter has been different but you just adapt and get on with it. Where I live the roads are kept reasonably clear and I would imagine the same would be said of PEI. Where about's in NS did you visit? I know I visited a couple of areas when I came over house hunting and felt more at home in the Cumberland area compared to Truro and Bridgewater and PEI is about 45 mins to an hour away, NB is about 20 mins away etc
