Hi,
I am a 45yr finishing carpenter from Aberdeen Scotland looking at moving to red deer alberta with my partner and 2 children(son 3 daughter 8) ,can anyone tell me if the housing construcion industry is still busy.We did visit calgary/edmonton/red deer 4 yrs ago to see what is like and we loved red deer by far but as you can see by the age of our son that has delayed us on doing what we set out to do!!!! So here we go again, also looking to find out what sort of mortgage re-payments we would have on a house with a budget of $350,000 with a deposit of $250,000 over 10yrs,
regards
Brian

If you are a good carpenter..you wont have a problem getting work in all three places..i would perhaps look at pitching yourself as being a carpenter foreman assuming your age and you have the required experience. This way your rate will be higher and security jobwise should be better.

Hi,many thanks for your response ,unfortunately i dont have experience of being a foreman carpenter as i work for myself employed here on a sub-contractor only basis. On looking at carpenter jobs i see that approx $1000 per w/k looks like an average wage before taxes and any other deductions would this be a good/bad or basic wage

There are loads of houses being built still, whether it's still as busy as it was I don't know. The above link shows the average wage for carpenters. The building permits were up from this time last year though - according to the radio yesterday.
