Did anyone import/take his/her car from US to Canada?

Did you have to make any change to the car? paperwork?

Thanks

If you are emigrating to Canada, you can import your car so long as it meets Canadian standards for emmisions and the like. It would be counted among your personal effects. I believe the term for it is "settlers effects". I know we did not have to pay tax on our car when we moved between provinces because it was counted as same. Check with Customs and Immigration and they can tell you for sure.

You gotta be on the list to get in mate

Some vehicles are fine, some dont have any chance, some need mods
Theres a nice government website or three devoted to the whole subject, you are not the first to travel this road.

http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/importation/menu.htm
http://www.riv.ca/
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pub/cm/...12-1-01-e.html
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pub/cp/...rc4140-05e.pdf

If you can import it make sure its on the goods to follow list to avoid duty on it.
There's a bit of paperwork involved.

What dot said. I brought a car into Canada from California (a long time ago). Assuming its a recent model with up-to-date emission controls, you just have to purchase new plates within six months if I remember correctly. Not a problem.

Dont assume anything. Many current US models do not meet a number of the standards...could be trivial like bilingual airbag labeling, or could be insurmoutable like bump test rated fenders that cannot be modified economically.

You could always just drive around on US plates like dbb, but I dont know quite how he swings that without falling foul of the law.

I bow to your superior knowledge. I guess I was just lucky...the car I brought in was a Japanese model (Mitsubishi) bought in California.

You also have to have owned it for 12 months prior to your move.

No where on the CBSA site can I find where it says that you must of owned it for 12 months.

"â–* If you are a first time settler to Canada and you
owned, possessed and used your vehicle before
your arrival in Canada. Refer also to the brochure
called Settling in Canada."

Also don't forget that the vehicle has to be exported from the US. You have to forward proof of ownership 72 hours to the Border where you are exporting it. So you pretty well need clear ownership.

See: :http//www.customs.ustreas.gov/xp/cgov/export/export_docs/motor_vehicle.xml

Also get a re-call printout from the Dealer to show that all recalls have been complied with.

I believe that technically it's only legal for use by the owner, the wetback woman, but I drive it anyway as I think the risk of getting busted is very slight.
