Or anywhere where there's an FTA in force that covers cars.

Very true but I have yet to see auto parts imported from or manufactured from the following countries

Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Israel, Jordan, Panama, and Peru all who have FTA agreements. Several countries have Foreign Protection & Promotion Agreements (FIPA's).
Obviously the CETA will be a big one when and if it ever gets signed plus the Asia Pacific one.

Silly border, silly different currencies, probably hurts both countries in the end, complicates things way too much.

do you pay the tax Where your cross or Where you live ? for HST and PST. Crossing into Alberta instead of BC for instance.

If the border was open Imagine the amount of money that would be saved Policing it. Using that money to better protect the external borders.

Probably have to keep that border for now....

The US and Canada need to create less hurdles and less border controls and be more open, and ideally use the same currency, why not have US stuff on one side and Canada stuff on the other?

You sound like quite the European federalist!!!!

Traditionally Canada is more different to the USA than most western European countries, a couple of world wars aside.

Harper seems to be intent on changing that.

BC Ministry of finance are clamping down on cross border BC shoppers. BC residents are supposed to self report PST. Some sellers across Canada charge PST to shipments sent to BC (not all though).

What apart from the same language and same culture its totally different.
In reality it's a just lame version of the US.

And I agree with Jsmth, the Canadians should use the US dollar.

There is no good enough reason on this earth why Canada and US should not have an open border. The Money saved be worth it.

Look at New Zealand and Australia
Ireland and the UK
Schengen
Russia and Belarus
India and Nepal

OK North and South have differences, and France sits in the middle, but all have some form of organised welfare system and higher taxes, with shootings a rarity and HFCS only in your nightmares.
