Vancouver is farther from Salt Spring than Chilliwhack or Mission would be but in those places you're running up against a different culture to Salt Spring. Bible belt rather than counter culture. There are closer islands than Salt Spring though.

I have travelled from the Rockies to Vancouver before and am sure there must be affordable spots along the way where you could set up a smallholding (or hobby farm). We're looking for a stunningly beautiful rural location with a strong community with a sense of self-sufficiency (so good for growing your own own and generating some of your own energy).

A great area for farming is here in the Creston Valley. Things tend to grow well here and the area is well known for it's produce. We tend not to get extremes of temperature here either, the Kootenay Lake seems to give a micro climate to the area. Only 40 klms from Yahk too

It depends. It's about 15 mins by float plane. Depending on ferry, it's about an hour to Victoria - I know people that commute to Victoria for work.

I do agree with the differences in "culture" also but without any info still from the OP, it's hard to give more accurate advice

If you want cheap and over run with hippy types then where I live would be perfect. Tete Jaune Cache, Dunster, McBride... Not much in the way of job opportunities, though (hence the prices!) and ~3 hrs drive to the nearest city - and about 9-10hrs from Vancouver!
Our 3 bed log home (with seperate income generating guest cabin) and 8 acres of land (50/50 woodland and pasture) would probably go for around $450-$500k if we were to sell up.

I was growing some nice rosemary, thyme, parsley and chives as they were the only ones that had surived the winter, then yesterday some bastard with a pressure washer blew them off the balcony when they were cleaning off the mildew.

What a *****. We had somebody do that when we were living downtown even though it wasn't allowed. Anti-social fckers.

Trail?
OK, maybe Nelson. I actually don't mind Castlegar even.

Hi folks,
We love Vancouver and has always been top of our list for locations to live (I have spent a total of 4 months there on home exchanges), but high property prices and expense and lack of "land" (in terms of a few acres), makes it financially unfeasible.
Can you recommend any good places to research and has anyone done anything similar? Is B.C. expensive where ever you go?
Thanks
