Default Ideas about flights out...

Dear Forumeers,
I plan to fly out with a work permit in april if not sooner (long story) And have been alarmed by the cost differance of one way flights against a return. :scared: Is it ok to book a return to save about £200 and then just cancel the return or would that cause problems with immigration/ work permit issue. I really do not need to waste anymore money.... please advise if you have done the flight out and saved any money.

would it be cheaper to fly charter to Calgary and get a one way hire to drive to winnipeg? I know its a long drive but........
Alternatively Lattitude plus fares (usually only available from the air canada website) are perhaps an alternative?

When we came to Canada, on permits, we had no return tickets. My Wife had a four year work permit - how could you possibly have a return ticket for August 2008? I guess it depends on how long your work permit would be valid for. If it's only 12 or less you might need a return. Over 12 months you probably can't book one anyway.

Then again I could be totally wrong

It's fine to ditch the return portion of a return journey - what you can't do is take the Chicago trip you did say, and abandon the outbound Chicago-Winnipeg bit, stay in Chicago, if you then want to use the Chicago-London bit to come back. You'll find your ticket's probably been invalidated. (does that make sense? I've rewritten in 3 times and it still sounds odd).

Beware that some airlines (ThomasCook for certain) want to see a PR card or a Canadian passport if you're only going on a one-way ticket. This isn't a requirement of Canadian immigration, just the airline's rule. I assume they'd be fine with a work permit, I'm trying to remember if the letter we got when booking one-ways said "evidence of entitlement to remain in Canada such as PR card or passport" or whether it just said "PR card or passport". Check with whoever you book with.

Do whatever is cheapest, on a work permit I doubt that immigration are looking for a return ticket, so dont worry either way.
