Crumpets are a rarity? I've been having crumpets in Canada since I was born, they sell them in every supermarket here?

There was a shortage of crumpets for a while when the factory (I seem to remember from a thread on here) burnt down or something.

Pricesmart in BC sell butter and non-butter crumpets. The butter ones are nicer (though probably less healthy!)

Even though they're widely available most Canadians I've spoken to have no idea what they are, and their uniqueness makes them very hard to describe!

Has anyone ever seen anything like an "English Muffin" while in England?

It's just you, they're just called Muffins in the UK and most supermarkets have their own brand of them. The ones here tend to taste a bit more bagelly.

We have english muffins back home, that's what the mcmuffin is made from!

Ah yeah I'm not sure if you get the ones with fruit in, those really are a bagel/muffin hybrid. But you can get plain ones.

They only became popular in the last 10-15 years I'd say, didn't you move over before that?

They're relatively popular now, but perversely, not as popular as they are in N.America!

Thrifty's always seem to have them here on Vancouver Island and they are very, very good; especially when the butter melts through the bottom of the crumpet - hmmm....
