Hydro in Vancouver, how do I know who to use.
Hi have a rental sorted but need to get gas and hydro sorted, no idea where to start!
Also contents insurance, for expats, anyone recommend?
Oh and tv, I'm out in the sticks (maple ridge, middle of nowhere!) need broadband or I'll go insane!
Thanks in advance ,

For TV/Phone/Internet there are a few providers. We use Shaw http://www.shaw.ca/Contact-Us/ and get a bundle of all three. About $130 a month for a reasonable internet speed, long-distance plan and TV package.
For home/contents insurance your best bet is to find a local insurance broker.

Stay clear of natural gas resellers Fortis BC are the best value. For our businesses we only use Fortis and save a bundle overall (ooo's).
We use Telus for TV, Phone and Internet, incl unlimited NA long distance and 1000 overseas minutes. $170 a month. Can be less if you choose less options. I have tried others, Shaw I found to be useless (worse than), phone resellers not much better, keep going back to Telus, been there 10+ years now. Switching my cell to Telus when my other contracts run out.
Like Jon said for electricity it is BC Hydro (which is why it is called 'Hydro') or your own GenSet.
Whats a DD?

Try Barton insurance or Johnston Meier (I would try these guys first, their H/O is in MR). I use both and they are both dependable. You want to ask for a 'Renters Policy" if you are renting. It matters not if you are an expat or any sort of pat come to that. Maple Ridge is not quite out in the sticks, mostly pretty urban by BC standards.

If you do pre authorised payments the payee requires a voided cheque so they have your banking details. Makes it easier for them that way, it also helps to make sure you are giving your banking details and not someone elses. they may also let you do online payments. Hydro and Terasen charge now for taking credit cards!
You can use photocopies of a cheque as well.

weird! but then im getting used to that.
fortis ask for th address, which is fine, but they then need a town its near - problem is none of them are anywhere near! im in maple ridge vancouver. but cant find anything ive even heard of, no mission, no surrey, no abbotsford, pitt meadows... i have googled some of those towns and they are millions of miles away so im not sure they service my area, ill ask the realtor who the owner uses and take it from there.
got bc hydro set up, they may want a deposit of $423! thats nice, i want to be a size 12,... but that aint gonna happen either lol. ahh being new is fun. but its worth the lumps.

Maple Ridge is not Vancouver (this might be the problem). Cities near MR would include Haney, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam. Not quite sure what you are on about though with towns its near. Maple Ridge is a city in its own right, so this should not be an issue. Never heard of that problem before.
When you give the address you give the suite # (if you have one), street address, city (Maple Ridge), post code.
