Huddersfield to ?????????????????
#1
Hi All,
We are Marie and Ben and are in the first stages of a move to B.C.
Spent over 4 years in New Zealand and then came back to Huddersfield (thought we were missing out!!) We have our sights set on Vancouver but the property prices seem sky high, could poss afford Langley (any opinions on this?) or any other affordable options I could nosey at.
Anyhow planning a trip over this summer to check things out, Mainly camping, Would we be better when the school holidays end for a trip as I have heard the camp sites get very busy and how warm would it be over all of September?
Any info greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Marie

Hello, Marie.
I don't know the answer to your question about neighbourhoods in the Greater Vancouver Area.
There are forum members who live in those parts -- Langley, Chilliwack, etc. I trust one of them will answer your question. You also could use the forum's search function to find threads that discuss those areas. And there are lots of BE forum members who live in the Greater Vancouver Area.
I think you'll find it's difficult to concentrate on the things you need to focus on during a recce if you're camping. I think your recce trip will be less productive if you camp. You should try to line up interviews if at all possible, and it would be tough to do that if you were bogged down by all the housekeeping that's involved with camping.
I thought we might be able to be more helpful if we knew your occupation, so I checked your other posts. I saw that one of you was a cable jointer. It took me a while to figure out that that occupation was called in Canada. The closest I could find was cable splicer, which is one of the titles under the category of Electrical Power Line and Cable Workers (#7244 on the National Occupational Classification). If you haven't already found this out, electrical power line and cable workers are amongst the Occupations under Pressure in BC. That's a comforting thing to know if you want to get a temporary work permit (TWP).
If you haven't already done so, I recommend that you read Beginner's Guide to Canadian Immigration, with special emphasis on the links to articles about job hunting in Canada. At this point, the most helpful article probably would be Finding Job Opportunities. But all the job hunting articles are important.
If you're going on a recce, it would pay to read the excellent Wiki called Scouting Trip.
September might be a more productive time for a recce trip. The weather tends to be very nice. It's still warm. September gets a bit more rain than July or August, but the full onslaught of the winter rain has not yet arrived. If you wanted to do informational interviews, people would tend to be back at work in September. The children's summer vacation, which lasts for the whole of July and August, would be over.
A forum where there is a wealth of knowledge about Vancouver and the Lower Mainland is Brits 2 Vancouver.
Hope that helps.

Hi and welcome, this site is a great wealth of information. We live across the water from Vancouver on Vancouver Island and love living here. As Judy has already said September can still have good weather and the children will be back in schools then so doing a reccie trip then would be fine. Good luck and best wishes!

Hi and welcome! Just wanted to say that a lot of campgrounds close after Labour day (1st Monday in September). Althought you do still get a lot of all season campgrounds.

Just wanted to say a quick hello and good luck from a fellow Huddersfudlian also planning to head to Vancouver!
P.S. What were you missing out on away from Huddersfield when you were in NZ? Was it worth coming back for? I spent a year in Canada on a BUNAC visa and have since spent two summers in Norway, can't say that I missed Huddersfield to be honest!

Hi Guys,
Just thought I'd say hello and best of luck with all your plans, to both of you Huddersfield girls.
I left West Yorks a couple of years ago for the East Coast but have relatives on the West Coast. I just love it here on the North Shore of Nova Scotia and never want to return even for a visit. It gets expensive though because it means I have to pay for my mum to fly over here for visits. Good thing she likes it too.
I am planning to visit Vancouver in the near future to see it for myself and meet up with relatives.
