How safe is Canada?
 

Given all the terrible stuff happening in the world right now, how safe from terrorism do you feel in Canada, most especially Toronto, compared to the other cities - London, Sydney etc. I don't really follow the Canadian new enough to understand whether Canada is more risky than it was a couple of years ago, but I'd be interested to hear peoples thoughts on this one, especially as we'll always be tied to living and working in a big cities.

Beyond nut-jobs though, how safe/stable do you think Toronto is long term in terms of food security, climate change etc?

Lack of stability is not Toronto's problem. It will still be there, unruffled by any form of disturbance or excitement, in 2115.

Stand back and think logically about your city.
How many died in car accidents in 2015?
How many were murdered in 2015?
How many committed suicide in 2015?
To mention but a few.
Then compare these numbers to the very small numbers of people killed by terrorists in 2015.
Then assess whether the TV wall-to-wall coverage that generates the fear you are expressing is warranted.

Pine Cone: I feel as safe in Canadian cities as I do in cities around the world.

Toronto doesn't even come close to hitting my sketchy/possibly dangerous gauge.

All I see trending is people bitching at each other about expansion of the Island airport or the UP express. No one in Toronto gives a tits about anything else.

Your biggest killer in this city is boredom followed by bad driving.

Credit where it's due you are probably safer in Canada than most places.

Looking out of my window this morning and at the current road conditions I have a larger case of anxiety of not feeling safe today. This has nothing to do with terrorism mind you but it will be heightened by the first snow and ice of the year.
Currently with the wind chill its minus 13C and walking around with shorts and a t shirt all day poses a risk of hypothermia or frost bite to the extremities.
Wind is from the NW gusting to 70kmh which blows the snow around and makes visibility challenging.
Last night there was a 17 vehicle pile up on a major route with no serious injuries as once again drivers failed to drive to the conditions as they believe they are somewhat invincible in a 4 x 4 SUV or similar vehicle with or without snow tires.

You can never be sure that there won't be a major terrorist attack in Canada but I'd say that other countries are much easier or bigger targets.

European cities seem more vulnerable at the moment simply because (a) Europe is closer to the Middle East and (b) terrorists can hide among refugees heading to Europe. Major targets include London, Paris, Moscow, and Brussels.

Hitting a US city is going to have a much bigger impact in terms of generating fear and headlines than hitting a Canadian city. So major US cities are probably more likely to be hit than Canadian cities - especially New York and Washington.

It amazes me that there haven't been more terrorist attacks like those on Paris. The intelligence and security services must be doing an amazing job behind the scenes.

Canada will shortly stop dropping bombs on the Middle East so it will be much, much safer than the countries that carry on dropping bombs on the Middle East.

Canada is too insignificant.

London, Paris, NYC , Washington all carry a significant weighting in the world so if you are going to invest time and resource in a planned attack you will do it where it does the most psychological damage to your most powerful adversaries.

In the context or terrorism, it shouldn't even be on your list of things to worry about in Canada, UK, Paris, US, etc.

How safe is Canada? Or how safe is Toronto? They aren't the same question. I think I'm right in saying London is closer to Toronto than I am. I really wouldn't put terrorism on any sort of risk map for immigration purposes. Crappy drivers - absolutely!

Using such logic, are you able to explain why those countries that are participating in the dispute in the Middle East, that are far more proximate to the area of fighting than France is, have not been the subject of attacks such as the one in Paris?

It isn't only the US, the UK and France that are participating, as I am sure you are aware. If Canada escapes any such attacks, it will be because, on the world stage, Canada is so insignificant that it will not be in the sights of anyone proposing such attacks.
