** Now the Bazzzz has gone.
To the OP. Apologies for the Sarcasm. Realistically it depends upon how long you need to sustain your family before you have an income. If you have a job to come to or will start one within a month or so then its really cash for start up stuff like cars, deposits on rentals or deposits on utlilities, car insurance (very expensive) etc. Figure $20k easily. If you need to sustain the two of you without a job then work out what you expected income would be. I would guess a minimum of $2k a month.
Of course others will have done it on less and some people will have spent much more. Thats why I refer you to my opening graphic.

We also spent $40K+ in 1997 setting up in Calgary in the first few months. It took 3 months to get a job. We we family 4, 2 adults and 2 young boys(2 + 4 yrs olds).
Costs were 2 cars $22k, Car insurance $4K(first yr premiums), 3 months living costs $7.5K, winter clothing $1K, Beds/furniture/electrical goods the remainder. Also factor what you have to spend finding work i.e travelling costs, as I had interviews in Calgary, Redeer and Edmonton and had to cover hotel/travel costs myself.

No sarcasm intended here but should really should bring as much as you can. Most people have spent years building up their homes and possessions and have no feel for how much the total cost of that is.
I came here in 2000 with about $55k. Souvette (a Canadian soldier posted to the UK for four years) split up with her husband while in the UK. He came back to Canada and took pretty much everything they had put in storage. We had to start from scratch. The $55k did not last long.

I will have some equity from a house sale, but what I was after doing was keeping the money separate; like '£xx put aside for a house deposit', '£x put aside for retirement savings', '£x for immigration costs' and so on - hence wondering what was spent on actual immigration costs as opposed to just bringing as much as possible (which I will do).
Thanks for your help.

I bet - I've just finished decorating and unpacked loads of books from boxes in the loft. I was pretty amazed how many there were and thought they must have cost me a fortune over the years.
I was originally thinking I'd just go over with a few boxes and start afresh, but looking at how many years it's taken us to build up furniture and 'things' I'm now thinking that it would be cheaper to ship it all over!

Well, I'm usually one for sarcasm but I can't be arsed on this occasion so.....
We just moved from England to Victoria, BC (and loving it
). We came with just above the minimum required funds (about $15k thanks to the crappy exchange rate at the time). No kids, just the two of us and a cat (Steve).
We've paid 3 months rent in advance, had $1k deposit on a credit card, had to buy kitchen bits, a few electricals etc and I reckon we've probably got about $6k left. We live on a bus route so we haven't bothered with a car. Nikki is working so now we're *almost* on an even keel as far as day-to-day cashflow goes. OK were not living a life of luxury but we have a nice little 2 bedroom place in a nice area, we are eating nice food, drinking beers and going out to eat/drink at least once a week.
Costs in the UK:
Shipping £5k
Flights £800
Cat moving expenses £700
So I reckon you could pay for everything and still have a pretty good life for under £15k if you're sensible.
Hope that helps
