I tend to think diamonds are a dodgy purchase made by snobs or people with so much money that it no longer matters to them. Normal people might as well stick to cubic zirconium which has a similar crystal structure if they like pointless shiny baubles.

Why can 37K not be high end?
Would you not describe Cartier as high end?
I can tell you that the International polo set, which includes a number of foreign Princes and multi-millionaires from here and abroad think it is very high end indeed.
The diamonds in this particular piece were small but were well above what any jeweller would describe as excellent quality and in 18 carat gold.
My stock included many notable jewellery designer names and not fashion items either. Diamonds of the highest quality ( D Flawless) were also present.
I could source emeralds from the best in the world and have pieces designed and made which were unique, if you could afford them.
But of course, I don't know the social circles you move in nor what your wife has in her jewellery box, so I cannot judge what you consider to be high end quality in jewellery.

It was also a very long time ago before I became a teacher....

Such riches as el_richo could only dream about.
But then Mrs Novocastrian is a very lucky woman

I do know the industry pretty well though, although not through my choosing. Often hearing of $1M+ sales kind of tainted my outlook on these things.

Ditto that. I brought my job with me too, or at least I turned it into the Canadian equivalent after much pushing in the UK. In 2008 when we were starting the process there was a global recession and I would never have come without at least one job sorted. The OH hot something after 3 months.

Hi
We landed 4 months ago in Victoria with no definite job offers for my husband who is a contract arborist or myself, we had some savings and a small business in the UK for which we receive some modest royalties for but we are by no means well off.
We also have the added pressure that we have a little girl so I am only working weekends enabling us to share the childcare.
Thankfully it seems to be working out but its been quite stressful, especially the first couple of months but we came with an open mind and would have done any job initially if we had not been successful in getting jobs.
I literally walked around Victoria with my CV bothering people for work, living here already and being able to start immediately helped.
Onwards and upwards!...................
