Ok thanks, that might be the reason for no Class 2 then. I was working up to May 2007 when we left UK but did not get a job straightaway in Canada (I did a stint at Starbucks) but not in a full time ‘proper’ job till 2009.

[2] The general rule is that you can only pay for "the current year and six preceeding years", but for a temporary period, ending in 2025 (Twenty Twenty-Five), IIRC you can contribute as far back as 2006-07, which as of today is 17 years. Which is why you were told "up to 17 years", when in your situation, the maximum number of additional years that you would actually buy would be 12 years, bringing you up to 35 years, which would get you the "full" state pension.
I thought Class 2 was only payable if you are self-employed, otherwise it is Class 3? Maybe not?

For reasons I don't recall, the Class 2 rate is available to people making voluntary contributions from outside the UK, so long as they meet the "continuous employment" rules I described above.

Within the UK, Class 2 is indeed primarily, if not exclusively, an NI contribution type for the self employed.

I hung on that call for near 50 minutes and gave up. I looked at the HMRC website again

https://www.gov.uk/pay-class-2-natio...-bank-transfer

and its as clear as mud to me. I was going to send a wire and it looks like you have to quote your NI number , the IC + surname and initial....does this look right?

Otherwise I was thinking about getting a UK bank draft and sending it with a copy of the letter they sent to me via registered mail telling them which years I am paying..

They dont make this simple....I have searched the forums but it looks like others have had the same questions...as yet not answered....

Thanks in advance
I opened a Wise (a UK bank) account in Canada with UK currency and added the UK funding currency from my Canadian bank. Then I used the Wise UK currency account to pay the NI class 2 yearly.

How easy is it to use the wise account ? I saw many people said that they are using it to make payment in the UK.
Actually the Pension Office told me that I owe £12.00 for NI contribution for year 2023/24. It would cost more than that to wire £12 to the UK.

Using a Wise account to pay for NI overseas is convenient. You need to open a Wise account with the British currency and pay for your NI. It is cheaper than wiring the money to the Revenue Customs Office. I think the cost is the currency conversion between the Canadian dollar and the British pound and a small fee depending on the amount paid for the NI.

thanks pmak
Payment online via Wise account was straight forward. I was sent a letter for my 12 pounds owed to HMRC re: Voluntary NI contributions for year 2023/24.
I have the bank account details and sorting code plus the 18 digits reference number.
