how long does it take to buy a car?
If we arrive in Vancouver and want to purchase a car (probably from a dealer) will we drive away with it that day or in a couple of days or does it take a while?
Am asking as we are looking at hiring a car and don't want to hire one for too long when we will be buying one straight away.
Do you think a week is long enough to find a car, complete the sale and be able to drive it insured?
Thanks for the help
Helen

Hi
I've been wondering the same!! So I called a garage in Canada. They told me it takes a couple of days to get everything sorted and a little less if you are paying cash (or no financing from them). I suppose that the day or 2 that they need gives you the time to sort out insurance.
Good luck

Same thoughts here, apparently it is all tied up document-wise at the brokers office, the dealer gets the car info and the broker ties it all up so you can go and drive away your shiny fast-depreciating hunk-a-junk
Our broker said it was a doddle, no hassles.

Hi,
If your not overly fussy and choose a stock car then you should be able to drive it away within a day or two. The only delay we had was arranging insurance and proving UK no claims history.

When we finally decided what colour and model we wanted, we went down to the dealer who said he could get that one for us the next day. He did. We went to see it that next evening and he said we could take it there and then on "dealer plates" and sort out paying for it later - no deposit or anything!!! Very trusting guy.
We didn't want to do that, but from seeing the car and agreeing a price we could have had it in minutes. As it was, we chose to collect it the next day after we'd picked up a bankers draft and arranged insurance.
This was Manitoba where by all accounts, insurance is far, far simpler and cheaper. We got the max discount available by having local licenses swapped from another province to get a "merit" point, and by showing 5yr no claims letters from our UK insurers.

PS. Here in New Brunswick, a personal plate (they say tag) is only £60!!!
if it has not been issued. You get it in two weeks.

We found our car at a dealer in one day, agreed a price, the dealer contacted a local insurance broker and got us insurance there and then. He even faxed all of our documents through. We went and picked up plates the next day as the car needed detailing and we needed to go to the bank to get the money. But that was it we drove away that day. So for us it took two days. As for the rental we just took it back early which was no problem at all. So I would definately get the rental car for long enough to cover all possibilities. The process was painless and quick.
All the best,
Phil
P.S. I am in Calgary.

I would say a couple of days if you are not fussy. Do you know what make and model you want. Domestic cars are cheap at the moment but reliability is a question, imports are more expensive with few deals around. I would never dream of buying a car in a couple of days with doing any research first.
