How long did the process take

I am at the point of desperation now......my partner and i have applied for permanent residency in July 2007 from the UK. I would like people who have already gone through it to make me feel more positive and tell me it doesn't take as long as the Immigration website says! That says 4 year, i've heard others say no more than 2.

We're actually looking at going in January 2009 on work permits, or working holiday visas basically so we can get a headstart....but that will mean having to come back to the UK after so long to sort documents and things out, in other words......a waste of our well saved pennies! So basically, going there as permanent residents would make things a whole lot easier!

Help!! Vanessa and Darren. x

Hi Vanessa and Darren,

Welcome to BE. You might want to look at www.trackitt.com where you can see timelines that people have put it.

London seem to be calling for Aug 06 applicants at the moment. We applied in October 06 and are patiently waiting and waiting and waiting, lol.

Hope that helps.

Karen

Re: How long did the process take

If you get a job offer and go out on a WP you can usually get your PR fast-tracked or even go for PNP if you are eligible. What is your occupation?

Just over 3yrs for PR - from April '05 to June '08 (skilled worker application).

My partner is in construction. I'm a PA, so anything office based for me...

How did you manage to get a telephone interview and then offered the job? We're constantly applying for jobs, signed up with the usual sites like monster.....i've had 1 response so far.....frustrating! If he could get a job in construction that could speed up our PR application?!!!

Hi Vanessa_Darren,

Our timeline is a bit more dated but all the same...
Applied Nov 04
Visas received May 07
Landed Calgary June 07
Emigrated October 07

We imagine you've found the Job Hunting part of the WIKI but just in case...
http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Catego...Hunting-Canada
Loads and loads of good info in there. When you say "construction" for your husband's business, are you able to be more specific and what part of Canada (if you yet have a preference) you have in mind?

The waiting - awful - everyone on here in the same boat or who have made it over here will sympathise.

Kind regards,

Eamonn & Janet.

I read your blog......really does inspire me to stick it out!!

Darren, unfortunately does not have his own company, he is skilled in all trades except electrician (there is a story involving him and a light fitting but i'm not sure he'd be too pleased if i divulged just yet!!), he's been in the construction business since he left school and during that has also been to uni and obtained a degree in Video Media Art (to become a film director one day). His reason in going to Canada is for pursuing that side of his career but if him doing the construction side of things means us getting there quicker, he would carry on with that a while longer.

Part of Canada.......what we would really like to do is travel round for a year-18 months to decide on where to settle, although i LOVE Edmonton (been to Vancouver, Edmonton, and Prince George) but whilst researching Darren has found Toronto to possibly the place for his film career.

Reading these replies, it seems no one has taken longer than 3 years and the CIV website says 4......i just hate it that you don't have much communication with CIC. This website is being a great help.

Hi.

As long as your OH has served an apprentiship in at least one trade, and has the certificate to prove it, he should have no problem finding work in construction.
Best of luck

Re: How long did the process take

Do remember that anybody that has already got PR is on a completely different timescale to you i.e. they applied earlier - each year that passed the backlog got greater and therefore wait times got longer. So somebody that applied in 2005 or 2006 is really unable to give you any idea of when you will hear as their situation is completely different to yours.

But I don't see why you think you'd need to come back to the UK if you went over via a TWP? You can just fasttrack your PR so would have no need to come back at all unless you wanted to. A TWP definitely sounds like your best plan.

And finally, forget emailing people and just looking at job websites - check out the Job Hunting section of the Wiki as Getting There has rightly suggested, once you've read it you'll soon read that you're unlikely to get any job that way! Canadians like personal contact so you need to phone them at the very least, and ideally go over on a reccie trip and arrange to meet people whilst there.

Good luck. :)
