How long do most people wait before applying for citizenship ?? I know the ins and outs of the 2 years out of 5 and all that stuff - more just curious about how long before most people bother their asses applying for it .
I have been here for almost 10 years now so I suppose I should get myself into gear and get it done

Hi
1. It is actually 3 years residency in the 4 years prior to the date of the application.
2. People who are from countries that require visitor visas to travel to other countries usually apply immediately when they are eligible. Some never apply as they don't wish to lose their citizenship (i.e. India Germany). Some other countries which don't recognize dual citizenship restrict property ownership to citizens, which is another reason people don't apply.
3. Sheer laziness in a lot of cases.

by that point I'd been in Canada for 7 years.

I'm like you inasmuch as I had been here for 5.5 years before I sent my application off last Friday.
The turning point for me was making a Canadian, although, laziness being what it is, I waited for a year or so until she was born to get around to it!

Arrived 1981, citizen in 1985, so a bit less than four years including the interview and ceremony and whatnot.

I arrived in March '69 and got Citizenship in March '74. No ceremony. I just went to Brampton Citizenship Office, paid $10, swore an Oath and that was it. British subjects got preferential treatment in those long gone days.

Got mine in 2003 I think, three years after PR, 5 or 6 years after arriving work permit in hand. Was "between jobs" at the time I applied, having realised US jobs were easier to access if you qualified under NAFTA rules.

I arrived in September 2004 and left it until December 2008 to apply. It's now March 2010 and I'm still waiting as apparently my application is still in progress.
My British passport is about to expire and PR card expired in October. I'm now having to renew those things because I can't yet apply for a Canadian passport although I suppose that I'll always want to keep a British passport valid.
