How Friendly are Canadians?
#1
Hi All
My partner was over in Calgary earlier this year and commented on how nice everyone was, as compared to the UK (sorry to offend any Brits).
What I want to know is how friendly Canadians really are? And indeed what is the friendliest part of the Country?
I ask this from the point of view of a potential newcomer wanting to know how easy it would be to integrate into society.
Thanks All

Very friendly here in Calgary but not in your face.
My brother and his wife were over for the stampede week and were astonished by the friendliness. But then again maybe that was Stampede week!
They found Vancouver more "busy", still friendly but less so than Calgary.

Been to Calgary recently. Generally people are polite and friendly here.

A big tick for Calgary for me too, in fact all the way thru the rockies. With the rockies it makes you think is it just polite or a case of we want your tourist money
. Been countless times to the GTA and although polite they keep themselves to themselves a lot more than Calgary. Still, a lot better than my experience of americans up and down the east coast. Don't bite my head off, just my opinion and experience.

Although there's almost a million people in Calgary, news travels fast and everybody seems to know everybody else ... one of the reasons it can be tough to get a job here when you first land ... as a rule of thumb, it pays to be nice to everyone you meet and try not to piss anyone off ...

I've always found ontario canadians to be very friendly and welcoming too (although as stated previously, people in the GTA seem to be in more of a rush?), and it seems to rub off on me too. Now I'm a citizen it seems they are even a little more welcoming, as maybe before they were not sure if I was going to stay long term??
Never heard of any unfriendly parts of canada, but I guess unless you have lived all over the country its very difficult to give an objective answer.

Sounds positive so far.
How would you say they compare with the people from the UK or US?

Canadians are very friendly over the long term! But as Glaswegian says, you will probably notice it more in the short term - for example, the service you get in a Canadian restaurant or at a Canadian Hotel, or even the people you meet on the street, will be much more friendly than in the US or UK....or at least from my experience.

Canadians in general are usually friendly people as long as you are a friendly out going person to them. In the maritimes they are super friendly...I found them to be so different from people in Ontario. Everyone seems to want to "chat". Comparing the friendly canadians to friendly brits, I don't think you can. Some areas of UK are friendly but some just don't have the time for you.Just my opinion!

this is very subjective - but IMO Vancouverites are polite and friendly - it can be a bit false and gushy (especially if they work in HR, fundraising or something similar!)
Personally it was the friendliness that bowled me over when I came over on holiday.
I have been told that Montreal is incredibly friendly, as are folk in the Maritimes.
I have yet to come across the gratuitous rudeness that I used to experience in London and other big cities in UK.
Clare
Mind you this niceness does backfire if you have a job interview - they never want you to have a bad experience, so can leave you with false impressions and hate to get back in contact if you have been unsuccessful
