On a related note I was recently disappointed to read the Seaman Staines never actually existed on Captain Pugwash. Childhood memories crushed and all that.

The Guardian was sued for libel by the creator John Ryan over just such a story. Ooops!

Funnily enough, no, I didn't. I knew ages ago it was an urban legend and actually read the Guardian on the day when it published that piece. I remember thinking at the same "ooo, there'll be trouble". A classic case of Schadenfreude.
