Default How does car insurance work in Canada..?

Hello!

Do you insure the vehicle for a specific driver as per the UK or is it different?

Thanks

In very general terms in Ontario you assign a primary driver to each vehicle, but all drivers at that address are covered to drive each vehicle.

This is why having teenagers in the house is a nightmare, although you can specifically exclude some named drivers from some vehicles its assumed that if they have a license then they will be driving at least one of the vehicles, so your premium jumps.

As far as lending a vehicle to someone not specifically named (ie visiting relative), you can do that at no cost, but if they have an accident, it basically counts as if you did it when it comes to renew.

Any driver is covered. Anyone driving with the permission of the vehicle owner, who is not specifically excluded from coverage. It's not limited to people living at that address.

The drivers used for rating are those thought by the insurer to be likely users of the car. Hence if three people live at an address where there are three cars, one person is deemed to be the primary driver of each car for the purpose of making a price, even though each driver can use any car.

If there are two cars and three drivers, and one is an expensive teen type, I was lead to believe that that is taken into account, regardless of the history of the named drivers or the likelyhood of the teen driving either vehicle?

Does that sound right?

Yes, that sounds right. If the company doesn't insist on the teen being the main driver of one car they'll load both equivalently. The only way to avoid a large bill is to explicitly exclude the teen from both cars.

In the end it kind of works like all insurance doesnt it really. You pick an insurance company, give them a giant pile of money and they give you a piece of paper in return and then you carry on.

In BC the province makes it easy, everyone has to use ICBC for basic insurance. They love money and charge through the nose, but can't expect competitive rates from a monopoly.

Thanks for the information guys. It'd be good if someone could add some of this to the Wiki to the car insurance page as it's a little different to what we're used to in the UK

Just to let you know (in NS) learner drivers do not display L plates on the vehicle they drive, nor does it add any extra cost to parents insurance while they are learning. Once he passed his test, my son cost an me extra $52 per month on my insurance. It's a graduated licencing system here with rules to follow eg absolutely no alcohol, no driving after midnight etc.

I am hoping he is getting his own car within the next couple of weeks because him and his younger brother sitting in the front of my CRV and me and his dad in the back seat may be cool for him, but not for us

In Calgary (Alberta), ask for TD Meloche Monex. I have insurance for just over $50 a month, which is less than half of what most of my friends pay.
