If you are living anywhere in Canada its advisable to buy dedicated snow tires for the winter as all seasons aren't really designed to handle heavy snow and their rubber compounds are useless in temps below -7C
A Google search on "Winter tires vs All season tires" will definitely educate anyone on the inadequacies of all season tires in the dregs of a Canadian winter. Actually here in Quebec snow tires are mandatory between Dec,15 and April 1 |

not sure i agree with this..i havent put snow tryes of my vehicle and just come through one of the snowiest winters for years here in Alberta...i travel regularly to Places like Jasper and Calgary and have no problems at all.
Isn't this a bit like arguing that you know someone that smoked from the age of 16 until they died at the age of 98, therefore, smoking is not bad for one's health?:p The performance difference between all seasons and dedicated snow tyres in cold, ice, snowy conditions is like comparing chalk and cheese. Snow tyres win hands down:D |

Got it. You win, hands down. Please accept my apologies;) |

I did. And just again. So you came through a snowy winter with no problems therefore you don't need snow tires? Yet. How long do you think your luck will last?
A lot has to do with location and I believe that you need far less luck as you put it in Calgary than I would in St. Johns say.;) |
Re: how does canada cope with the snow?
I think I've only got all seasons again this year (dunno OH's dept). Last year I had winter tyres, I slipped and slided (made up word but hey, I'm in Canada so I can do that) all over the place.
I think a lot of it has to do with the actual vehicle rather than the tyres. Last year Navigator and snow tyres = Piff hates this car and it slides everywhere and it's too big. Previous year Expedition and all season tyres = Piff quite likes this car even though it's big and would have another one. This year, a Jeep Liberty, and all seasons (I think) = initially Piff hated the car until winter hit and found out that it's actually good in the snow and got grumpy with OH when he almost sold it. Next year I'm supposed to have a Freelander, but I will be happy to keep the Jeep. |

While I do admit that winter tires are likely the best option, if you're going to call it luck that people can get through winters on "all seasons" then I'm one of the lucky ones...46 winters so far. :p

Re: how does canada cope with the snow?
I put on snow tyres this year and I can say that if you honestly can't tell the difference then you must be driving like an old woman. With mine I whizzed around quite a bit more than the speed limit on compacted snow as if it wasn't there at all. I guess I could have been creeping along at low speeds on all seasons - but really, what's the point of that.
