I used to hike, climb, cave, and paraglide all year round in the UK

The diferance here is you have more seasonal sports...

Unless you suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) caused by days, if not weeks, of dull, grey skies.

Also caused by short days, so its a factor in Northern Canada, but in the chunk of Ontario where a large part of the population lives, the days are not only sunnier than the UK, but longer too. Where are we? about the same level as Nice or Rome or something?

Yup ... Calgary lines up with London ... so for Scots, the winter days are longer ... plus it's so sunny :D

Yep, I definitely have zero tolerance of rain. West coast Scotland can be really depressing just because it hardly seems to stop raining! I hate it. I would much rather be in the middle of a snowstorm in -20/-30 than +10 in the rain in Glasgow!!!

Rain seems to seep into your bones somehow no matter what you wear, but the snowy cold kind of burns any exposed skin on the outside. You soon defrost. I just make sure I am completely covered!

Hi Sue

It really isn't that bad as long as you dress for it. I was worried about the winter/cold etc. as I really feel the cold. Our house is so warm, Tom goes around in shorts and t-shirt quite alot!

This is our first Canadian winter and so far so good! We've had a few snow storms and temps as low as -30 but it hasn't bothered us as we've dressed appropriately and tried to have as much fun in the snow as we can.

Hi everyone,

We've yet to arrive in Canada but I have to agree with what someone else said on here about the Brits. not caring how cold it is as long as it is sunny (I think it was Glaswegian). That's me I'm afraid :D I hate the overcast, dull, wet, manky, depressing, hair frizzing, grey, miserable weather we get in the west country. We didn't even have a summer last year, not even one barb-que! When we were in Canada it was sunny every single day for the 3 weeks we were there. I expect we were lucky with the weather though.

Sounds like you were! either that or you werent here last year. We still BBQd of course, but summer never happened. My family had one beach day, and even in August it was too cold to swim in Lake Ontario, which weve done every other year with no problem. Hopefully this coming summer will be back to normal, the winter certainly is...snowing again, but not like out East!

I think this is the true great division in Canadian society ... what's worse, shovelling snow or being pissed on by the heavens??

If you substitute "grey, wet damp and miserable" for "cold" you could b talking about the UK.

Retired now - but doing part time snow shifting for the next few months. In the UK I was service manager for an eletronic equipment pre-press supply company - why?
