I have been looking at the Red Seal website for information on applying to take the red seal exam.
I am an Electrician and have been looking at the Alberta section, but the only thing i can find is about applying for a temporary workers certificate.
Can someone guide me in the right direction for applying for the Red Seal exam whilst in England
Thanks

I'm applying myself in Alberta but you have to go to the AITB offices in Alberta, they have them all over, to apply, you also have to prove 9000 hours of trade experience by way of employer's letters detailing the type of work you have carried out and the hours you have worked.
If you require more info there are plenty of guys on here or just email or call directly the AITB, their website is www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca, they are by all acounts very helpful.
Hope this is some help to you, good luck from one spark to another

I believe you have to take it in Canada. But all of the info is on the Red Seal website.
Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Sorry to be the bad news person here, but you can only get checked to see if you are able to sit the exam, you are unable to just fly over sit the exam and fly back anymore :curse:
Some guys seem to messed this up for others, now when you sit the test, the AAIT will check with your employer to make sure the employer is happy with your work before you get the licence.
The best way is to get checked to make sure you can sit the licence, take the approval with you to interviews and done
You will then arrive on twp with job and sit the exam within 6mths of being here

How do i know, sadly this has just happened to a family, passed the test and unable to issue the licence as he has no employer here and is sat in the uk.
Feel free to PM me, i know Ian
Also helps if you advise what kind of electrician you are

Sorry, i didn't think it was that important about what electrician I was when it came to sitting the Red Seal.
I do most commercial works associated with BMS control systems, heating control systems etc. Most of the time I do the installation of the control systems from the BMS panels, sometimes i design and install the more simplified heating control systems.
I also do domestic work sometimes, and commercial power and light, it really depends on what work is about.

As far as the red seal is concerned you will need to sit for all trades as when you have the licence you will be qualified as a journeyman electrician.
Abig part of the exam is motors, why i ask which type of electrician is because we network between people, not just on here, but via different networks
especially where trades are concerned.
Good luck on your search

When you say the best way is to go in on a TWP then apply for the Red Seal, are employers still happy to take you on and do they pay a lot less because you have not got the ticket.
As i do mainly BMS controls installations, is there specialized companies that do this work or does this still go through the electrical contractors.
Here, i normally deal with systems houses who do all the Trend, siemens, york etc. They get the jobs, design and build the control panels then sub the installation out to me, at the end of the job they commission the panel.
Thanks

The licence can only be sat when you are here via an employer, so you have three options
1. get employer to do the LMO and gives you the twp
2. via the pnp route
3. you are on the hot list of 38 that you can apply for PR and they advise you could be PR in 6/12 mths, dont quote me on that one as not heard anyone as of yet who has been fast tracked on it
You need the employer/job to be able to sit the licence, but if you prove that you are able to challenge the exam, then that is what the employer needs. As far as lower pay because they are going through the hassle, your trade is very union based, so they have set rules of what your pay is, plus they have to offer the going rate for calgary or which ever area you are looking at or the LMO will be refused on wage grounds.
Hope that helps

normally with the pre-approval you can get the employers interested, also will depend on what type of electrician he is, i know commercial electricians here in town are struggling, i hear more so in calgary
But in town they are still after industrial electricians and i know of three companys that are still advertising for guys (also known as maintenance electricians in the uk)
