Default how do employers react to sick children?

Hi
We are hoping to immigrate to Nova Scotia and are interested to know how Canadian employers react to parents having to leave work to deal with sick children.
We have a 5 and 2 year old and so far have been very lucky in this in our UK jobs as we both work full time and have at times, had to leave to deal with illness and take time off.
I would be interested to hear what experiences people have had with this, I appreciate that people are different and that applies to managers everywhere but if someone could give me an idea on what the culture is generally like re this, that would be great.
To give you more info, I am an accountant and hubby is in the police

Cheers
Natasha
