Re: House is too hot!
I just measured a heat index of 106F (41C) in the shade here, which is just above the 'danger' threshold.
I think I might go hang out in the big fridge at the liquor store for a while.

My additional tip:
Go to North-West France for July & August. A beautiful day today, a perfect 24C and set that way for a month. |

Why not rent a punkhawallah ? (Google it) ;)

Re: House is too hot!
Central air is the only way to stay cool. Buy a house with it and u be ok. It's a constant 71f in our house 24/7
Strange tho how it feels cool in summer, yet nice n warm in winter, and it's the same temp. Lol |

Re: House is too hot!
It's a rental house so installing central AC isn't an option, though one to consider for our first owned house! I currently have all the windows shut and a dehumidifier running, it's pulling out water but also heating the room up. Not pleasant but I'm sticking with it to see if it helps in the long run.
I will need to find out more about window AC units. They are affordable, and MIT do for occasional use whe it gets really bad. Kaye5 - you're not wrong about the difference between here and Scotland temp wise lol... My body is wondering what's going on! |

Re: House is too hot!
We just cool the bedroom with a portable AC unit. Stick the hose out the window, cover the gap at the bottom of the window with plastic and duct tape, put a tray under the water drain, and it's done.

Re: House is too hot!
Portable ones seem pricier than the window units, are the worth the extra?

Re: House is too hot!
You could try putting a frozen bottle of water in front of the fan.
We used to have a small place with an old window unit - it worked well and we blocked the sides with wood and had no issues with bugs. |

Yikes..for me 71 f is quite cold for a house in the summer. We keep ours at 78 f and sometimes down to 76 f if it feels very hot upstairs to sleep. One thing to keep in mind is to not open the windows as soon as outside temp is lower than the cooled temp indoors...humidity is often quite high with little breeze in heatwaves, at least here in eastern Canada. Although the temp may be lower you are just letting in humid air.
I usually keep my thermometer at 73F simply because the humidity gets too high otherwise. With lower humidity, I can tolerate higher temperatures. I wish my thermostat had a humidity setting in addition to the temperature setting so that the a/c would kick in if the humidity or temperature reached a certain level. It provides a humidity reading so it might have the capability to do that but I need to delve into the manual to find out for sure. |

No. For one thing they take up quite a bit of space and the vents to the outside are quite large. A window unit is the easiest to deal with and not too pricy. |
Re: House is too hot!
we're about to head into town so will go and take a look at some window units then.
The mousepad of my laptop is getting too hot to touch - this isn't good! |

I think I might go hang out in the big fridge at the liquor store for a while. I dunno, but a bit of research might have helped back then. |
