Come to Brussels - it's nice and safe here. The beggars and tramps are really friendly and the amputées at the traffic lights are so nice.
Joking aside, it's not a really violent city, except when English football fans arrive
, but it has its share of poverty and alternative life-style choices. There are a lot of immigrants - the vast majority hard working.
I'm expecting exactly the same thing in Canada.
Would say though that I was always very careful when walking around UK cities at night (with the exception of Bristol), Brussels feels more secure in most areas.

Come to civilised Guelph.
I passed a guy in the downtown area yesterday who started bawling at the top of his lungs:
" YOU, I F**KING KNOW WHO YOU ARE, I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING, I CAN F**KING STOP YOU....etc."
As we all stopped to stare at the local lunatic, the bus pulled up and he meekly got on, paid his fare, sat down and headed off home.....or onto his next pitch for shouting pointless diatribes.
So civilised and very Canadian. If it had been Glasgow he would have either attacked you or have been attacked in turn himself.
