How do women do that?

It does look fantastic, and we are very pleased with it, but I really don't think I can recommend our contractor ..... not if you want your work started or finished in a timely manner, a quotation in writing or the final figure to be anything like the estimate!

Just listen to Judy! :o

ps You're welcome to come and have a look though!

No actually I am being unfair ..... the basement was pretty near to what he'd promised, though it went on a bit time-wise, but he did it completely on his own with no assistants or subcontractors and he has a very high standard of work!
He had really burned us with the work he did on the main house, which came to far more than he expected, and was not ready for us to move into when we needed to, so he had to get guys to help, and it really ended up as a bit of a rush job, which was a shame!

He's a busy guy though so you might have to wait at least for him to start work, and he's often finishing off one job and trying to start the next as he's promised a start date .... a little disorganised.

For example we renovated our kitchen in the UK - we started knocking down walls in July - hubby promised me it would be ready for crimbo so we could have people for crimbo rather than having to drive all over the country visiting rellies. In November we got a man in to finish the plastering and put the cabinets up and put the work top on. 2 Days before crimbo we boarded a flight to Florida (I didn't want to drive all over the country visiting rellies). We eventually got the tiles up and grouting done and painting done for the house to go on the market in Feb - he flew out here to start work end of march. Kitchen and living room still needed skirting boards and new floors when we sold the place.

So forgive me my wifely comments if I don't want my en-suite to take 8 months to do (especially as he thinks we should do 2 bathrooms at once:eek:).

I am actually very patient, hence why we have so many cars in various states of repair. When we moved in this house last May, hubby promised that the en-suite would be done that winter. At least one bathroom will be done this winter - even if it is a tradesman that comes to do the stuff I can't - i.e. plumbing and knocking down walls and lighting - i'll do the rest. Let me remind you how bad it is.........No No I can't subject you all to that hideous sight again:p

I hear you Piff Poff! might as well pay someone then wait for hubby to do it `when I get around to it`.. also, it will probably save your marriage:thumbsup:

weird thing here... many of you (me included) move over the pond because there is so much work available here. we all know that specially western canada is very short of tradespeople - which ensures us a fast tracked pr-applications but at the same time must mean that there are waiting lists with the tradespeople who are here, right? but we complain about the time frames for the jobs a) to be started and b) to be done.

but canadians obviously do think that trades are a very simple thing and can't take that long as well. not to mention that they seem to think that we tradespeople stand around in their shop and wait for work these days ... phone call at the shop last week (boss was out at a customer's place):

- hello, are you a woodworking shop?
- yes, we are. how can i help you?
- i need a table for my typewriter...
- i'm sorry, tables aren't our main field of production. if you want a custom made table it would be easier to talk to the boss about all the details. he is the one who does the layout and the pricing. but please keep in mind that we are very busy at the moment and that it may take several weeks to get it done.
- several weeks for a simple table?
- i thought a table for your typewriter? there is a bit of work involved even in producing a simple table. and our team is very busy in meeting the expectations of customers who wait for their kitchens. so we won't be able to do your table this or next week.
- i don't have that much time.
- well, i'm sorry, that's all i can tell you.
(i was polite enough not to tell her that the box stores or even a thrift store would be better places to look for a "simple table" for which she didn't want a) to wait and b) by the sound of it pay much...) :(

OK - another quick update - for anyone vaguely interested ...

Have had my appointment with the Home Depot lady who designs bathrooms and kitchens. I took all my measurements with me - of the bathroom and kitchen you understand, not my measurements - that would be silly.

First off, due to staffing and contractor shortages, Home Depot (in Calgary anyway) are no longer offering a full installation service on bathrooms. They will fit cabinets and work tops and install a bath - but that's pretty much it. And they do still offer a tiling service (from $6.50-$9 a sq foot depending on the type of tile). So if you are looking forward to anything more exciting than a new tub or sink unit, they cannot help (with installation).

Kitchens are still Ok at the moment with regard to installation contractors. I only want new tiles and a worktop but of course the one I like will come to about $4k. For a worktop

So back to square one really for us. I have been given the names of two guys this week who may be able to assist - but I am waiting for both to call us back. Think it might be a bit a wait !!

It's nice to think they'll do a good job but in our experience (only some blinds but still), they didn't do an especially good job. When we did call to complain it turned out the contractor had changed within days.

Personally I think I would go to a decent kitchen/bathroom store (not big box) and talk to them. In my experience businesses like that have contractors they have worked with for some time and rely heavily on the general reputation of their business from purchase to install. In contrast Home Depot "Installation Services" are pretty faceless - you could be getting a guy who's worked for them for years or someone who started yesterday and the store overall probably have enough business not to really care whether every install job is a great job.

Just my tuppence...

Have you tried Rona? We were unimpressed with Home Depot's service, quotes were always high no matter which service we wanted. The kitchen cost was extortionate. I happened to be in our local Rona store one day and checked out their kitchen installations - short story is my countertops cost way, way less and are really nice. Aside from that, we found that going to places that specialised in bathrooms or kitchens or flooring or whatever, rather than big box stores, was more cost-effective and helpful.

Did it once - not a whole Kitchen or Bathroom; just a countertop. Won't do it again! Expensive and mediocre at best in my opinion.

There are (or were when I looked a while back) some nightmarish reports to be found on the web from customers about their Kitchen/bathroom installations. You *might* get a really good guy/guys though.

Re: Home Depot - Installation Services

Hubby has his own kitchen & bathroom installation company.

His advice would be on getting an installer, is to get a verbal recommendation from friends/neighbours & have a good look at their workmanship. Also ask to see photos (any good installer will have photos of their work to show customers) & it's also good to ask for references from past customers that you can phone.

Any good installer will be booked up by at least 3 months (well in the UK anyway) - beware or any installer that can fit you in in the next couple of weeks.

The last bit of advice would be not to use installers from the big companies- they don't pay contractors well, so the 'not so good' installers tend to work for them.

Hope this helps,

Arris :D
