Hi there

Hi everyone,

. We had been looking into moving to new zealand but have now decided that we're almost sure it doesnt suit us right now for a few different reasons. My OH wanted us to look into Canada back then but we didn't look seriously. Now we are! We're young and have no kids so want to experience living in different countries but think Canada would be a good one to try first.

So we're just trying to do some research at the moment. OH is a heavy equipment operator and also has his truck licence. We are looking at Alberta as we are lead to believe this is the most likely area of finding a employer willing to go through hiring from uk.

Last year there was a expo in Scotland that had a few companies hiring for his job, I've managed to get some of the names. It's coming back this year so we hope to go.

Meant to add that neither of us have visited but thinking of coming over for a reccie if we find any employers are interested

Anyway just wanted to say hi. I'll probably have some questions as we're looking into it further

Hi,I went to the expo last year at the Glasgow Hilton myself, and was very disappointed with it.I honestly found more information from google, than from the expo(a couple of mates told me the same,at first optimistic, but several months down the line, with still no replies)

I had also looked briefly into NZ,mainly because I have relatives living there,Canada came out trumps though(way more opportunity)

You do know that ANY licences other than the standard car licence must be re-sat in Canada don't you?

Was that the working abroad.net one? They advertise the companies looking on their website, the list comes out next week.

We have relatives in aus but not nz, spoke to lots of people who loved visiting but said they probably wouldn't want to live there for the same reasons as you mentioned. OH has distant relatives in canada but we don't know them, might be cool to look them up!

He mentioned Canada first by then we found out all about the christchurch rebuild so focused on that. The cost of travel from there and low wages were one of the main things that put us off.

Obviously both completely different countries but both with different pros and cons. The more we research Canada the more we feel it would be more suited to us. Trips to America are a huge plus for us although we realise there aren't cheap flights like Ryanair and that some employers give employees less holiday time.

Yes we already knew about licences, think it's the same in most countries. Even here he has to do tests to renew his excavator licence every few years.

Anyway I'm rambling now, need to find a employer first so no point getting carried away.

Which part of Canada are you moving to?

Re: Hi there

hey heading myself aswell to Calgary at the end of march cant wait now:) had been offered a job in Christchurch but its just too far away and the money was not that good:thumbdown:

Re: Hi there

The money for us wasnt going either, we didnt expect it to be amazing anyway because obviously he's not in a skilled job but it was barely over the minimum salary needed for them to sponsor us. Cost of living is high too. We just made a list of pro's and cons and it most likely wasnt right for us at the moment.

When are you heading over to canada? We had a reply from a agency who said they had positions in calgary and edmonton and they said he seemed suited to them but i would rather deal with companies directly.

We've sent out quite a few cv's out already (or shall i say resume's lol) hopefully get some replies but will ring some aswell. Might find someone to chat to at the expo aswell.

I probably sound like a crazy lady since most people just choose one country and stick with it lol, dont see whats wrong with looking into all options though.

Best of luck with your move! :)

Stacey, what agency/agencies did you use? I'm heading to calgary in 3 weeks from Inverness for a 6-8 week recce, and haven't approached any agencies yet.

Cheers :)

I replied to a agency ad on here,I think they were called vrv global. Seemed nice enough, we would just rather deal with companies directly if poss.

Best of luck on your recce!

Re: Hi there

If we dont get any response from companies then we'll definitely consider a visit this summer. I would of liked one anyway but would save money if we just took the plunge. Slightly easier because we dont have kids either, probably eouldnt be brave enough to go without visiting if we did!

Hope you get into the O+G! :)

What do you do in construction? There seems to be quite a few companies going to Ireland looking for construction workers, that's where I got some of the names from!
