Default Hi

Hi Guy's
The wife and I got a letter this morning saying that we have passed the selection and to go get a medical.... We don't know long it takes from here but it has taken nearly three years so far.
We have no ideas what they look for in a medical and what would halt the application at this point...any ideas on problems to expect at this stage or are we worrying for nothing?

I think we are stunned after such a long time waiting and gnawing fingernails

We would love to hear from people at the same stage as us or from folks who have just been through this...
Good luck to all.

Hi and welcome.
Do read info in the Wikki and search past threads/posts as there has been much discussion on this topic.
Best of luck.

Hi and welcome to BE.
The Medical is just a general medical history with blood/urine tests and chest x-ray. Theres nothing to worry about.
All being well then you should hear back fairly soon after the Med results are sent back. e.g. We had our Meds in Sept '05 and in Nov '05 we were asked for our passports.

Hth you at this exciting point in the process!

I did the note below after we went for our meds earlier this year...

I did this note for a couple of other people with questions. I'd recommend the numberone clinic in Harley St - great service, nice lady doctor and quick turnaround of results.

I wouldn't worry too much - think they are mainly looking for awful stuff like cancer, TB, AIDs etc.
All three of us had a chest X-ray (for over 11s only.) This was done at a clinic round the corner from the doc's and was all over in 15 mins for all three of us. We were given gowns to wear.
Adults have
- weight
- height
- eyesight - cursory thing, checking distance with glasses/contact lens
- ears
- glands
- reflexes
- stomach - mainly prodding
- breast examination
- husband had an examination for testicular cancer
- blood pressure
- blood tests (diabetes etc)
- urine test
Kids like my daughter - over 11 - have all of the above apart from blood test and blood pressure/breast/ testicle examination.
Took about half an hour each.
It's wise to have a chat with the nurse at your GPs to get all the dates of operations/illnesses. Then you're prepared. Also have dates and results of last couple of smear tests. No internal exam on the day!
Doctor also asks about drinking habits, psychological problems, smoking and any communicable diseases you may have had plus any serious things like cancer.
Nothing like as bad as we thought and all couriered off within 48 hours of the last test.
Doctor was a lady, very pleasant particularly with my nervous 11 year old.
She was happy to tell us that she wasn't recommending anything be followed up with our GP.
All in all, very straightforward and easy and not far from Euston.
