what you never see or hear is how many "good" people come back...a high % of people who leave the UK actually do come back..not everybody who leaves, leaves for good.

I would have to disagree that "a lot" go back. Of those that came here in the past 5 years that I actually know, I would put the figure at about 8-10%, if that. and they were people who could not, or would not, adjust to the different way of life.
regarding lower wages for day work... Well sort of. If you do the flat 9 hours then you take a huge hit if you were productive on long haul. In my case, I went from a 13000 mile average to day work and the hit was about 35% of my bottom line, but if I do 10 hours overtime a week then I actually earn more.
I doubt very much that you would get day work straight away. It simply doesn't work like that.

Thanks for all your replies friends-sorry i didn't get back sooner, we have just been camping up in Scotland for a couple of weeks and little pickles Junior caught the biggest fish i've ever seen.
Yeah i did hear i would have to retake my test-and i also know it ain't cheap, which made me wonder weather i would fit in better as a Welder or something in Canada.
I used to weld Pressure vessels in the 90's and i have my Lloyds Codings-just an option until i finally get citizenship then i think i'll run for Sheriff.
I like Trucking but i have never been one to Polish the dam thing and put my name on it-Jesus i'd rather be home with Mrs Pickles polishing her things if ya know what i mean.
Don't get me wrong-i ain't work shy, i can dig a hole faster than anyone, with my bare hands if i have too-i just like to be home at night with my family, play my Geetar, clean my rifles, teach the kids how to make lethal booby traps.
I'd like more honest views and opinions on HGV Canada-so keep em coming.
Thanks again
God Bless you all

No LMO's for local fish deliveries only for long haul, thats why so many go back coz they cant handle the 2-3 years on long haul before getting PR.

Statistically it is somewhere between 30-40% that eventually return for whatever reason and it is something like 10% of UK immigration each year is made up of returning expats.

Maybe it is that, statistically, but I can go only from that which I have seen and it is nowhere near that.
As for day work, I was long haul 5 years before going on day work, and it was only because I lost my wife that I did so.
In theory, once you are nominated, you could get a new WP for day work if the company you go to have long haul work. Ask any ex BFS driver and half of them were on day work even if it was called long haul!!

I think what makes and breaks it for most is if you were driving a supermarket trolley back home, home every night with great horuly rate + OT then you might not adjust that well to Long Haul. Those that have done the tramping seem to settle better.
I also think that it also depends on which company you are working for. I am very very lucky in that I only paid for my test fees. My employer paid me hourly rate to train and reimbursed my meals on the first couple of weeks. I was out on my own making the same as all the others after a month. As for getting all the crap to start with thats not always the case and again depends on the company. I have always been treated equaly - my first trip on my own was from here to Minneapolis (just shy of 2000 miles each way)
I work when I want and if I want 3 days at home or if I want 5 days at home its never an issue - BUT I like everyone else I get paid for what I do.
They also paid my return Airfare to UK after 3 months probation. I could not work for a better company
Different compannies will have different runs and contracts so talk to them and find out as much as you can from them. For example I run all over the US and Canada which suits me fine but another company here will only run the 'triangle' : Maritimes - North East US - Otntario - Maritimes. Horses for courses.
There are a lot of horror stories about Trucking over here and no doubt there are some real cowboys but the same is true of anywhere.
I wish you all the best
ps ask lots of questions!!!!!

From reading this: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2011/03/prweb5192114.htm only 4% of (worlwide) expats who did the survey intended to return to the UK within the next 12 months.
I would really be interested to read the report (showing the 30-40%) if you are able to give me a link to it please!

When you say that 30-40% of expats return to the UK, is that from worldwide emigration or just from Canada?
