I would have to disagree that "a lot" go back. Of those that came here in the past 5 years that I actually know, I would put the figure at about 8-10%, if that. and they were people who could not, or would not, adjust to the different way of life.
regarding lower wages for day work... Well sort of. If you do the flat 9 hours then you take a huge hit if you were productive on long haul. In my case, I went from a 13000 mile average to day work and the hit was about 35% of my bottom line, but if I do 10 hours overtime a week then I actually earn more. I doubt very much that you would get day work straight away. It simply doesn't work like that. |

Maybe it is that, statistically, but I can go only from that which I have seen and it is nowhere near that.
As for day work, I was long haul 5 years before going on day work, and it was only because I lost my wife that I did so. In theory, once you are nominated, you could get a new WP for day work if the company you go to have long haul work. Ask any ex BFS driver and half of them were on day work even if it was called long haul!! :rofl::rofl::p |

I think what makes and breaks it for most is if you were driving a supermarket trolley back home, home every night with great horuly rate + OT then you might not adjust that well to Long Haul. Those that have done the tramping seem to settle better.
I also think that it also depends on which company you are working for. I am very very lucky in that I only paid for my test fees. My employer paid me hourly rate to train and reimbursed my meals on the first couple of weeks. I was out on my own making the same as all the others after a month. As for getting all the crap to start with thats not always the case and again depends on the company. I have always been treated equaly - my first trip on my own was from here to Minneapolis (just shy of 2000 miles each way) :D I work when I want and if I want 3 days at home or if I want 5 days at home its never an issue - BUT I like everyone else I get paid for what I do. They also paid my return Airfare to UK after 3 months probation. I could not work for a better company :thumbup: Different compannies will have different runs and contracts so talk to them and find out as much as you can from them. For example I run all over the US and Canada which suits me fine but another company here will only run the 'triangle' : Maritimes - North East US - Otntario - Maritimes. Horses for courses. There are a lot of horror stories about Trucking over here and no doubt there are some real cowboys but the same is true of anywhere.
