As far as I am aware, there is still a shortage of truck drivers in Canada.

However, when I came over to Alberta, I had my car, motorbike and class 1 hgv license, and when it got exchanged for an Alberta one, all I got was the car license. I have since re sat my bike license, but not my hgv.

I am a carpenter, so I didn't need my hgv, but I had driven long distance in the UK, so it would have been nice to still have it. You would need to check if it is different in other provinces, but you may need to re sit it. I looked into it, but was quite expensive compared to the UK.

Hi, and welcome to BE.

To start one of you will need a job offer and LMO to get a visa, you'd then get a Temporary Work Permit.

Be aware that if you were the holder of the job offer and LMO, your partner may not be able to work in Canada, depending on the province you go to, so you'll need to chose quite carefully if she wishes to work. You also couldn't apply for PR in some provinces, as truck driving isn't classed as a skilled job, so again that's another thing to look in to if you think you'll want to stay longer term.

Your partner will need go be licensed I believe to work as a hairdresser, so check out what exams etc she'll need to sit to be able to work.

Hope that gets you started, do have a look at the Wiki for info on visas and other stuff, and there is also a truck driving section of the forum that would be worth a visit.

Best of luck.

We can't put you in touch, you'll need to contact them yourself, but you can hopefully get company names for the threads in the trucking section.

Good luck.

Have a look at the Working Abroad by Profession, section of the forum under 'Trucking'. Absolutely tons of info!

Bear in mind though that a lot of it is, shall we say, bull crap, so take it all with a pinch of salt and do your own research. Some good pointers to get started with though!

I have just come back from New Brunswick after 2 years driving truck.
Easy to get work there. It.s the usual thing of LMO etc.
With NB your wife can't work on your LMO and would need to try and get her own. She can work after you apply for PR which you can do after you have been working for the same employer for 1 year.
There are a number of different jobs from long haul to scheduled runs and home most nights, depending on who you work for etc.
If you want ask me anything about New Brunswick, going there, getting started, cost etc I will do my best to help you with a no B/S warts and all account of my experience there.
Good luck
