HELP re the Alberta surplus payout
#1
Hi all
Just elaborating from the discussion on the "Alberta" thread with regards to the
pay out all Albertans are due to receive.
Does anyone know how this works for a family like us who have only been here since May. As we understand it at the moment as long as you were resident on Sept 1st 05 (which we were) you are eligible, BUT, you need to file a 2004 tax return despite having no income here in that time. We have printed the forms off, thats as far as we've got
We also understand that the kids can get it as long as we are registered for child tax benefit (which we are)
HELP PLEASE if anyone knows the dtails on this

Its not as simple as submitting a tax return - you surely have to be liable to file a return also. As you didnt arrive until May you are surely unable to submit a tax return (subject to not being Canadian .......). You would need to have been resident of Alberta on 31st of December 2004 to meet this part of the qualifying criteria. As I read the rules you dont qualify - sorry.
The Government of Alberta "Backgrounder" explains it all.

I just read further down in the "Backgrounder" and GOOD news.

Under the section titled "Common questions and answers on Alberta's resource rebate" if you go down to point number 21 you'll see it says.
Will recent immigrants to Alberta from outside of Canada receive rebates?
Immigrants who filed a 2004 Canadian tax return will see rebates. Immigrants who are Permanent Residents but were not able to file a 2004 tax return will receive a rebate at a later date so long as they were resident in Alberta on September 1, 2005.

Hubbys has e-mailed them with a couple of questions and got an automated response saying we will get a reply in 3-4 days, but hubby feels pretty sure we will be entitled to the payout.

Any up-dates from your end on this topic
All we know extra is that it appears we will be entitled to the payout, but they will not be considering new immigrant cases until after March, whereas everyone else should get their chqs in January
Please add if you know more than we do.

I plan to phone that number above tomorrow as we still don't know wether we have to submit the blank 04 return, it doesn't appear so from what weve read, but need to hear it from the horses mouth. Will let you know
The e-mail we sent them just came back directing us back to the website, so no joy there. I'll get to the bottom of it though................ON A MISSION. !
