Ok im living in vancouver...I need to have my British passport re-issued to me...it states that i need to have a co signature sign the document, and that the person signing must be of a certain profession or standing and have known you personally for at least 2 years....the trouble is that i do not know anyone here in that standing...i really need my passport and i don't know what to do....so if anyone out there has any advice or info for me it would be most appreciated....thanks, mc

Did you talk to the British Consul? There has to be a work around for persons in your situation.

If you know someone for less than 2 years, get them to sign and strike out 2 years with the correct amount of time.
If they still refuse you, then you have the right to make a formal complaint (plus get in touch with the British media) about unreasonable denial of passport facilities.
Some people have got a person in the U.K. who knows them to sign (send form over there and send it back).

When I got mine renewed a year or so ago in Toronto I was in a similar situation and knew nobody in Canada who fitted the specified categories. I was in the process of applying for a mortgage and so I went to the bank and got the bank manager who was helping with our mortgage to sign it all and give me one of his business cards. He was reluctant at first as a bank manager wasn't allowed to do it in Canada at the time (now any Canadian passport holder can do it) but I convinced him it was ok for a UK one and then I put in a letter with my passport application explaining that I didn't know anyone but that the bank manager knew me and as we were applying for a mortgage was familar with all our ID and was confident we were who we said we were etc. I got my passport back no problems or questions asked etc.
