Re: HELP ON MOVING TO TORONTO

A question for those warning about Jane/Finch, rough bits of Scarborough, Regent Park, how would a new immigrant, presumably white, with a job and money in the bank, qualify to live in these rougher areas of social housing?

Nope - seems you are right - apparently she will not get a space!

Oh. Well that isn't very good. I based that assumption on my previous workplace back home and the local Uni here. Both of which provide staff parking. But then UofT is all, like, special.

Not particularly special. Where I work Parking "Services" are the biggest money maker on campus after foreign student fees.

Might i ask what sort of position your OH is going to take at U of T?

If she's an academic then being tied to GO train scheds or similar is going to be a real problem. If it's some sort of 9-5 job then a commute might be possible.

Shes actually going to be in the institute of cancer research - based at the uni I believe ... shes a researcher whos group is moving later this year over there - no funding in breast cancer in the UK any more - hence the move (something we have always fancied and the opportunity is great! :)) - if its like the work here, shes keeps fairly regular hours ... looking at the time table it looks as though she should be able to fit around the train times ...

101 College. That's just about walkable from Union so I suppose if she really does have regular hours then commuting via GO is a possibility.

But have you really thought through the reasons you want to live miles away from the city? I know that if I worked downtown, I'd certainly live somewhere on the subway.

Yeah ... neither of us are all that keen on city life - its nice to visit, but good to get away from! We have not ruled out living somewhere closer - particularly at first - and you never know, we may turn into urbanites ... but we like open spaces, views and as you'll see from my other threads, we have dogs and so like to have a largish garden and space for them - helps their sanity (in return ours and indeed neighbours!) ...

BUT, we are keen to try and become a 1 car household so the public transport is an desirable ... this thread has been/is great at giving ideas on areas etc!

Fair enough. However I would strongly suggest you rent somewhere accessible to start with and explore various other possibilities at your leisure (including trial commutes).

Best of luck with the move.

I wouldn't fancy that walk in winter. I don't think the PATH system goes that far north and th wind whips down the North/south streets in winter.

I would second the rent and try stuff out approach

I wouldn't fancy it either. But you can get as far Bay & Dundas on PATH, which isn't far from College. It would drive me nuts though (no sarcastic comment if you please).

I'm also not sure that the PATH is something you should endure as a new resident either. I hear of people being lost for days down there :)

I worked at University and College and thereabouts for years, walking first from 25 The Esplanade and later from the Queen car, it wasn't so far or so cold but there were millions of beggars and that made it a hassle. I switched to walking up from the Beach to the College car and that was easier, having to speak to people first thing in the morning is too much, even if all you say is "**** off", "**** off", "**** off".

A mate of mine is a researcher at UofT/Sick Kids, I don't know if he's typical but regular hours are not part of it; it's many hours in a row, whiz off to a conference, divert to have bits tattooed in a foreign land, laze for a couple of weeks, repeat. I'd think that usual.

I'd third that, after making an early house purchase. I floved the house, but unfortunately neither the commute nor the area suited my lifestyle at that time.

As a result I had to rent the place for a year, and lost $$$$ when I did finally manage to sell it. Far better to wait for a year + and figure out if you like it here, and what area suits your lifestyle.
