Default help in finding work

Hello to you all.
My wife and I and my 2 teenage daughters are contemplating moving to Canada for a better life.
I am a LGV 1 Driver for 18 yrs over here in the U.K and Christine my good lady is a travel agent, we have 2 girls one 16yrs and one 14yrs.
Please could you give us any advice regarding job prospects and are there any sites we could go to. We have been told to not seek emigration via and agent as they are very expensive and not always in your interest?
We should have about 130.000 English pounds so should be able to find a reasonable house for that. If I was able to get work over in Canada I would consider moving over first, getting settled then bring my family over later. Could any ex pats tell me how they went on and any advice they could give us. We have been looking at Winnipeg area even though it’s very cold in winter. But would move anywhere

Thank you all
Keith and Christine

Try H and R thread and Wages for Truckers. loads of info on those threads.

We are off to Saskatchewan Mal has a job with Yanke in Regina he has been a truck driver for 20+ years. Also look at this http://www.immigration.gov.sk.ca/trucker/

Keep asking questions there are loads of people on this site that have moved to canada in different way.

Welcome

Hi there, Porter family.

You may find it helpful to read the Wiki article on Truck Driving in Canada.

Alot of Canadian trucking firms are recruiting UK drivers - see the truckers thread which Judy posted.

We have been told to not seek emigration via and agent as they are very expensive and not always in your interest?

As far as I am aware most of these trucking firms sort out the paperwork for your WP if you are offered a job - so that would cut out your costs here.

We should have about 130.000 English pounds so should be able to find a reasonable house for that.

Depends what area of the country you choose - Canada is vast.

If I was able to get work over in Canada I would consider moving over first, getting settled then bring my family over later. Could any ex pats tell me how they went on and any advice they could give us.

My advice - dont do it !! Seriously my hubby went out before me and I spent 6 months on my own and it isnt a very nice thing to go through for sure and I wouldnt recommend it for anyone except in an emergency.

We have been looking at Winnipeg area even though it’s very cold in winter. But would move anywhere

Thank you all

Do a forum search for my user name and then you could try and pick out the posts about how low I got on my own without my OH and left with the kids to cope with. I would seriously only consider leaving your family behind if you really have to.

Hi Porters

H&R Transport H&R are advertising in this months' Truckstop News truckstop news that they are interviewing in the UK in September, may be worth giving them a shout (Lorna_D has already mentioned the H&R thread on this forum.

Cool Re: help in finding work

Don't listen to anyone who does live in a place as their view will not reflect on the true "Life" of a community.

Being Cold in winterpeg, as people put it, is a good thing means roads are safer. Outdoor ice rinks are eaiser to maintain. Rivers are good for fishing and there is not bloody mosquitos. Which if were big enough to carry of a small dog would give you the chance to kill the stinking invisible things.

1 good thing re WN is they fog a lot more often, without regard for hippies.

Also to take into consideration in deciding where your family would ultimately want to relocate to is how long you are willing to travel to visit (or have ppl visit) you, keep in mind that Canada is the second largest country (land mass wise) and spans 3 (or is it 4 with the Martimes?) time zones.... Montreal to Vancouver was more expensive to fly to then Montreal to London for example as its a 7+ hour flight from MTL to VAN and its a 5+ hour flight from MTL to London... you get my drift right?

If weather (extremes in both cold & heat) put you off Canada, best re-examin your reasons for moving... yes we get bitter cold snaps (-30cel) in winter and loads of snow, but we (in MTL/TO atleast) also get very hot spells in summer 30+ cel and one thing overall I know, we get shedloads more sunny days then in the UK... I thought Englands weather was being exagerated when I moved here in 2004.... I now know the sad truth all too well!
