That would make sense - provincial versus federal.

I like living where we live in Amherstburg when we first came 10 years ago we lived in LaSalle which is 10 mins north of Amhertsburg, A'burg is a small town with everything we need, grocery stores, its own Walmart, nice restaurants, schools, some really nice sub divisions and its on the river, it has 2 Tim Hortons (wooohoooo) Lasalle up the road is bigger but still nice....then u go into Windsor which is about 20 mins away from A'burg with all ya Home Depot's and shopping malls etc.....its very industrial round here so the air quality isn't brill in Windsor, its better down here in A/burg there isn't much scenery, altho the view of the US from our side of the river is lovely and we have some nice beaches.....the great thing about living around here tho is real estate is cheap, you can get a nice 3 bedroomed raised ranch with an unfinished basement for about $200k.....its very very safe, and u can be in the US in 20 mins and u can be at Detroit airport in 40 mins!!

Federal = central government, usually requires citizenship to vote, even to get a fairly basic job I believe (not necessarily all).

Provincial = each province can set their own rules and requirements.

Always needs citizenship to vote. But not to get a fairly basic job.

[Provincial = each province can set their own rules and requirements.

Also needs citizenship to vote, but not to get a fairly basic job.

RCMP requirements:

Ontario police:

So you need citizenship for RCMP anf PR for OPP.

I know the facts. I was asking why they make sense.

Not that I give a damn. I'm a citizen and have no wish to become a plod. Or to have any closer relationship with federal or provincial governments than I've not been able to avoid so far.

Since I threw it in earlier and it had become the subject some debate I just thought I'd clarify....thats all. No agenda.

I appologise to the origional poster for possibly gettting things off topic.

Lots of information adn replies thats great thanks guys.

I'm not particulary bothered about being near relitives they are not close ones and i have only ever met them once, i speak to them on facebook, and i suppose once there i would get to know them better, but i'm going with the mind set that we will be alone out there until we make friends.

I think i have narrowed it down to Ajax, Markham, Durham and pickering.

Does anyone have any particular thoughts on these area's for jobs, school, housing??

Thanks guys

B4 u do anything, check out cost of living, especially car insurance. Seems that $300 - $400 dollars A MONTH is the norm. We are also looking to move to same area, but the cost of living is a real eye opener. Check out the thread i started on cost of living, its very long but there is some excellent info in there.

go north! Pickle Lake or something! life is much, much more interesting up that way. none o' this dull suburban commuter malarky!

up north is good for policing too. the OPP rookies always get sent for a tour of the north to start them off. plus there's the native police forces you could work with. much more adventurous!

Durham is the whole region encompassing Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa and is lovely (in parts, like anywhere else), if you don't want to be in the thick of it busy then I would not go for Pickering, Ajax, you're going to be east west on the 401 highway, lovely if you love the M25 sort of traffic. If you're going to be working in any of these areas then do yourself a favour and go north south in direction (you're going to be on the lake anyway in Pickering and Ajax and Oshawa), my husband works in Pickering but we live north and he hits hardly any traffic until he's right near work. Having said that don't think it's going to be really easy to find work in Durham region. Your main employers are Ontario Power, the 'Regions' ,GM, Lakeridge Health and it's like breaking into jail to get into them, there's plenty of retail work but not that much office work around right now, depending on how much you're willing to bend on what you're earning. If you're travelling quite a way then your gas has to really be taken into consideration cos Canadians do long distances to work. I was working south Oshawa but got fed up with the travelling and have now decided to find work locally for less money and less stress. Take into account you're only probably going to negotiate three weeks vacation at the most to start, usually two and it takes it out of you after a few years, having said that we get lots of long weekends through the summer, good luck with your move!!!!!!!!!!!
