Smile Hello - PEI and teaching ??

Hello everyone

DH and I hope to be off to PEI in the next few months - we've had our medicals and are just waiting anxiously for our pasport requests. Just wondered if anyone else was heading to PEI - there seem to be plenty of you in NS.

Still deciding exactly what we're going to do in PEI (plenty of ideas but nothing definite yet..) but I'm a secondary math(s) teacher and while I'm not exactly keen to stay in the classroom I'd love some advice if that's what I decide to do. Also - how popular is private math(s) tuition/coaching in Canada - would it be worth me pusuing this ? How much could I charge ?

Thanks for any help

Looking forward to joining in discussions here and picking up lots of ideas.

So no one has anything (good or bad) to say about PEI ??!! Has anyone else ever even BEEN there ?? Can't believe we'll be the only ex-brits on the whole island - actually I know we won't be as I know there are some there already....

Surely there must be another teacher out there who can give me some hints ? Or a parent who has paid for extra tuition - or are the canadian schools so good that no one needs it ??

Thanks again

Hi
I'm not the teacher of our house but I have a wife who is.
We are moving to Vancouver this year (from the UK) and have looked into what is needed to get the wifes teaching credential to BC standards.
Looks like she will have to do one year to attain her BEd.
Here is a link to the BC college of teachers I'm sure they will have a suitable link for PEI up there.

You may find that going into school is quite different from the UK. My wife is hoping to teach (In NS) and we looked at a few schools for our kids.
You sound a bit like so many Uk teachers that need a break from the classroom but we were surprised by how happy and unstressed the teachers were and that was at the end of the day! They do supply teaching too!
Just a thought! Good luck!

Yes I've been there. Very pretty, beautiful clean beaches, not much work, not too keen on "incomers". I pay for my kids education, but that is my choice as I do not rate the School District I happen to live in.

We dont know anything about PEI - sorry. In relation to extra tuition - we have never paid for any as our children are only in grades one and three. Anything they have needed we have been able to teach. There are however some large tutoring companies (Oxford, Sylvan etc) who seem to charge a fortune! Some teachers also provide tuition services in the evenings and holidays but I'm not sure if that would be free-lance or via one of these tutoring companies.

Happy and unstressed? Now THAT I like the sound of!
Looks like many school districts are keen to recruit supply teachers, so that could be a good temporary work option.

Thanks everyone

We love the beauty and rurality(?!) of PEI and are going as business PNPs so we've got to stay for at least a year and give it a go If it doesn't work out then we'll be free to move somewhere else. I don't really want to teach but realise that I might have to at least do some supply to pay the bills until a business takes off. Property prices mean we won't need a mortgage though and it's a complete change of lifestyle (no stress and commuting) that we're after so hopefully it'll work out ! Got to get our passport requests first - I keep stalking the postman every morning

We happen to love the Chram of PEI...we have spent alot of time there, but never lived there. We do have friends in Charlottetown and Summerside...I have always found the people to be quite friendly. I think they are so used to tourists and foreigners. We almost moved over there a few years ago but the job fell through. Another thing to think about is it is only a drive across to Nova Scotia or New Brunswick..so if you et fed up, all the ones coming to Nova Scotia arenot far away!

Yes, I've been to PEI. We almost emigrated over there on the PNP programme in 2003, but changed our minds. I'm also a teacher, (primary) so was interested in the education system out there. Schools did seem a lot more laid back, but not necessarily in a good way!??!! That's an opinion I have, but it could be challenged quite easily by those who've done more research.

PEI really is a beautiful place isn't it? I met up with some people while we were there who were very helpful and gave us a load of advice. I found them through the internet. There are other Brits on the Island, the lady processing our application was going to put us in touch with them. Don't know much about Maths teaching though.

Are you familiar with the peinfo site? Some of the guys on there may be able to answer your questions. www.peiinfo.com
Hope the move goes well
