Talking Hello from a newbie

Hello everyone.
Firstly just want to say WOW what a great site!

So i joined the site to see if I can gain some valuable information about what its like trying to emigrate to canada.
We were going to sell our house and move in with my dad so we could save like crazy for a year while the applications are going through. But I see some applications take up to 40 months not sure I could live there for that long!
What is the maximum age for someone to be able to emigrate? I want to bring my dad with me but my hubby thinks he will be too old.
We are thinking about going down the skilled worker route as my husband is a chef and I belive that it falls in to the category??
But what other ways could we come in? He has family that live in Canada ontario but its an uncle not what we would call a close family

Sorry if this has already been covered somewhere
thanks in anticiapation of your replies and advice

Hi foxxytiger

We are also not prepared to wait for PR and are trying the work permit/PNP route. I saw some Chef jobs on the Alberta PNP site yesterday so depending what provinces you are willing to go to you could try that. (I don't *think* Ontario do PNP but could be wrong...)

Hi Carolyn - welcome to the wonderful world of Canadian immigration!
Firstly, you need to have an idea of which Province you wish to go to. Then you have a couple of options as the family sponsorship option seems to be out for you as an Uncle doesn't really qualify. I can't remember the maximum age to immigrate but you could look it up at the CIC website.
So there are two routes. Skilled Worker catagory is based on points. If you have enough points you can apply to immigrate without having to have a job offer. However, once your application is submitted it sits in a big ol' pile of other Skilled Worker applications and gets looked at once someone has been so kind as to wipe all the dust off of it! It can take ages; 3 years or more.
What do you do for a living? As a Chef your husband may be able to get a job offer and you could then apply under the Provincial Nominee Program. The PNP is a scheme run by individual provinces where they sponsor a would be employee through the immigration process. What kind of chef is your husband? I'm a chef but we did PNP through my partner as she's a nurse. Nurses are in high demand and we had no problem getting sponsorship. Chefs are not in such high demand so you'd have to work at it a bit. But it's worth it. We thought about immigrating to Canada last May and in two weeks time we are leaving for BC. The PNP is certainly an option for you but your husband being a chef will require a lot of research. You'd probably be well served by going to the area you want to immigrate to and try and get some interviews from companies that use the PNP program.
There's another way of immigrating using a Labour Market Opinion but I'm not too familiar with this method. I think it's where the government decides whether or not your occupation is high demand enough to warrant you high priority as an immigrant. May not work for Chefs but worth trying out nonetheless.
Hope that helps somewhat! Good luck

Welcome on board.

We just applied via the skilled worker route a couple of weeks ago, but meanwhile are trying our hardest to get there via PNP too.

I am trying to get a transfer with my company, although it is still at a very early stage and her indoors has a few "irons in the fire" as wee speak.

I would definitely do what I am doing and apply via the skilled worker route just so you have a place in the queue, but still try for PNP at the same time.

Good luck!

Thanks for the rapid response guys!
My hubby is a second chef almost head chef and we have been loking at jobs over there already.
I work in retail so I know my skills arent really required per se.
We are not sure which area we want to be - like I say uncle is in lindsay, ontario, but we have been looking at new brunswick too.
Tbh we are willing to try any area (within eason) as long as we can afford to get accommodation etc adn a reasonable job.

I will look at some web sites relating to PNP wasnt sure how that worked (just thought skilled was our only option!d'oh)

New Brunswick will be much easier to get into than ON. We met the NB Immigration office people at the Emigrate show and they were practically buying our tickets for us when other provinces had been sucking air through their teeth in a 'it'll cost you' motor mechanic stylee

NB sounds good - I've never been there but I know they need new immigrants! Certainly more than Ontario needs. Seems the vast majority of people head for the greater Toronto area. Vancouver is popular too and then Alberta in general. Anywhere else and you may have a better chance. Research time now!!
