Do tell us more......after potentially years of waiting, I'd be interested to know the reasoning if this is a genuine thread...alternatively, is there a black market in visas? Can't see any on Ebay....

Re: hello
i'm curious to know why you have said you are speechless, i presume you have checked out my post in the maple leaf forum. if so its just my wife and my opinion, at the end of the day i don't see any point in going to canada when i already have a negative opinion about so much,(not the people or the country/scenery). if you are not mentally prepared to emigrate before you leave the uk then you are probably not going to survive.

Re: hello
This experience just goes to show everyone how important it is to spend months and months on research before even applying. Searches on this forum cover just about every topic, and many that I hadn't even considered on my own.
I am not put off in the least but before we spend £££ I will carry on compiling and and reading of others experiences and opinions. What a shame that the visa is going to waste. Hope Australia has a cool spot for you. |
Re: hello
thanks for the reply. it is a shame that a visa is going to waste cos if we get in oz we won't be going back to canada,(unless for a holiday). we did meet some brits in vancouver who were on working hol visas and would have loved the chance to emigrate.
i don't want anyone to think my wife and i are ungrateful people by not appreciating what we have, (in the visa), the chance of a better life, definately, canada is a fantastic place with friendly people but in our current occupations we would not see each other if we only got 2 weeks off a year, and in my job as i've already said the shift system i work at the moment,(its much the same in all fabrication jobs), runs you down physically and mentally, so the extra 2-3 weeks we would get in oz would give us a chance to re-charge our batteries and more importantly explore our new home. ideally we would like to run our own bussiness but finances dictate that this would be really difficult,(+ we wouldn't really be sure what to go in to). so hopefully its oz for us, its just a shame that canada has this situation because i will bet there is a lot of brits who would feel the same way. back row. |

back row. I have said I am speechless, as your post in the Maple Leaf suggests that the reason you are not coming to Canada is because you would only get 2 weeks holiday PA. That seems pretty lame. As we all know it costs a lot of time and money to go through visa application process as well as a lot of what ifs? what ifs? For us the amount of vacation we get did not even enter the equation, we fell in love with the whole bundle and knew we would be starting on a bottom rung (actually hubby is earning more with less hours and I am part time earning about the same as I did full time in UK). We didn't expect anything to be handed out to us and we expected to work for our living. With your latest post you have expanded a little saying that you have some more negative opinions and that you are not prepared to emigrate just yet, I hope by the time you get your visa for Oz you are prepared and Oz turns out to be the best move for you. Good luck for the future. |
Re: hello
Having lived in Ontario for the last six years I don't think backrow's argument is that out of whack. Part of the reason a lot of Canadians stay where they work for years is because they don't want to go back to building their vacation up again. I love Canada and I can't see myself going back to live in the UK though I'd never say never but I can also admit to feeling totally exhausted at times due to lack of relaxation time. Someone said to me before I moved here that Canadians work hard and play hard, well I can vouch for the first as I work my backside off but I'm not so sure about the latter.
The fact that we do work so hard enables us to get away weekends in summer like a lot of Canadians and we probably couldn't do that in the UK, that for me makes being here worthwhile. I do dream though of getting a month out and just totally relaxing, two weeks a year really doesn't cut it, my husband was in shock for about a year having come from UK with 31 days a year to chill out! I used to moan about my measly 21 days. For me the benefits of living here outweigh this irritation and if you advance more holiday can be negotiated. I do think it is a topic to be taken seriously into consideration, you pass by this way only once and all work and no play does make Jack a dull boy. |
Re: hello
thank you canpickle for that post, i was begining to think that i was some sort of wimp in that i seemed alone in my feelings for only 2 weeks hols a year.
everyones situation is different, working in an office environment is not as physically demanding as ,say, working in a steelworks/shipyard, and as i already stated i need my time off to re-charge my batteries. having been a contractor for most of my life in the uk and abroad. i have worked on jobs where you got no sick pay or holiday pay,(its only since 1999 in the uk that you have to have holiday pay by law), so i have only had a week or two a year off in a year of working ,(sometimes working 6-7 days a week for months), and its rubbish, so i'm not about to go rushing back to it. the fortunate thing about having a trade/proffession that is wanted in a country like canada,(or for us now oz), is having the option to go or not. to start a new life abroad you have to be 100% positive and if you have a major problem with something like holidays its hard to think about anything else. for people who think this is a 'lame' excuse well i say ,'walk a mile in my shoes', go and work in a stone crushin plant/steel works/shipyard/coalmine etc, etc, at the rough end of it ie: getting your hands dirty and see how you like 2 weeks a year. anyhow we are of to oz where i know we will have ups and downs but we will enjoy it! back row |
Re: hello
Think you hit the nail on the head. Each to their own. We know we're going to miss the holidays, but we plan to use the weekends more to do outdoorsy stuff, and to start our own business. Once we're established we'll, hopefully, be able to cut ourselves a bit more slack.
I'm dead jealous that you've got your visa - we're waiting for PPR - but having a visa doesn't mean you should feel compelled to use it. It's brave to get all that way down the line, and then change tack. We almost moved to Fort Lauderdale in 2003. We already had a house in Florida, and had identified a business to buy, which would mean we could move in six weeks. I went out to Miami to meet the brokers on my own and hit a major culture shock. Male chauvanism, racism, you name it. I am used to dealing with men on an equal footing, and I've held down senior roles in large companies, but these guys didn't take me seriously. Much to my husband's horror, I decided Florida wasn't for me, and I couldn't see myself bringing up kids there. Taught me a BIG lesson, and although we'd done lots of research before we decided on FL, we've done even more, and had more 'real' reccies before settling on Canada. As it happens, the business we were planning to buy in Florida would've been hard hit by the hurricanes of 2004, so we were lucky. Our livelihood could've been wiped out and we'd have been forced to come back to the UK. In short, then, each to their own. Good luck, and hope Auz turns out to be everything you hope it will be. |

Re: hello
thanks for that last posting, and thank you for wishing us all the best in oz.
putting posts on this web-site has helped me in my own mind think of the other reasons for not going to canada, and really i think that i always wanted oz in the 1st place,(having already lived there), canada was probably a comprimise for my wife as she was keener on canada than me. so hopefully NSW for us this year. back row. |

Re: hello
For the record backrow we have friends that we grew up with in London who now live in the Blue Mountains in Oz, just outside of Sydney, who are still bugging us to move there saying we'd love it but for us one dose of emigrating is enough for now. His major gripe is going out on his motorbike in summer and finding the heat totally unbearable as he can't get any windchill (windchill...........brrrrrrrrrr not a problem we have here :) ) and says it's like opening the oven door onto your face, self inflicted torture, everywhere you go there's the positives and negatives, I wish yourself and your family all the best in your move. Our buddy out there says his experience of emigrating out there is like going on holiday and not bothering to come home again! So that can't be bad can it.
