Tangram lives in New Brunswick, next door to Nova Scotia, so I believe his information is relevant to you.

For other discussion threads in which people have listed their monthly costs, see:
Hope that helps.

Bloody fortune. As much as $400 in winter months for a 3 bedroom house.

Don't underestimate the costs of aircon in Summer either. It can often get incredibly humid. Some days I come out of an airconditioned shop and my specs get steamed up just like they did in Engand coming into a warm building from the cold.

I kid you not.

My heating oil costs are on a monthly payment plan, and are about $180 a month. Thats a bit skewed as that includes my water heating costs, and with 2 small kids we do a lot of laundry and baths.

We also spend about $110 a month on electricity on average.

If its oil heating it is really expensive. I undertstand natural gas is a lot cheaper but most areas dont have it. The key thing to remember is that although it might be $400/month averaged out your usage isnt averaged out so for a couple of really cold months you might spend $1000/month but then in the summer months you would hardly spend anything.

People can only tell you what they pay for their own homes, which obviously could vary enormously. I've worked out (cos I do things like that) that for the last 3 months; December, January and February the cost of running the gas furnace averaged $8 per day, which includes tax. For electric (hydro) $4 and water $1 (all rounded up). That's for a 3000 sq foot home and there's always been someone in.

So in short - about $380 a month for all utilities for the winter. I would hope that that would half at least for the summer but I have yet to get the information on that. Speak to me next November.

Sorry I should have said that monthly cost averaged over the year included heating, lighting etc ... basically my electricity bill. Minimal propane costs for the fire. So very similar to Steve's costs.

My most expensive month was Jan18-Feb18, cost CAD 164.73 for gas. That's furnace at 20-ishC (no programmable thermostat in this house ) and gas fire on in the evenings. Someone home almost every day. 3200sqft.

This is far cheaper than a 1300sqft house in Winnipeg cost. I assume not only because of the outside temp difference, but also because of better insulation in a new house vs a 30yr old one.

I can't complain though, but I will get a new thermostat because I know I can shave more off the bills - we used to drop it down to 16c overnight in Winnipeg

just to give a little bit of a different perspective too...
-2200 sqft house, well insulated, many south facing windows, 2 person household, low energy appliances, woodstove, electric heater in bathroom, electric hot water heater (which is going to be replaced by tankless water heater soon, which again saves 50% of electricity cost)
cost of electricity monthly> $50-60
6 cords of wood for the winter (to be cut and split) > $700

Hydro One will give you one if you sign up for their smart something or other program (allows them to increase you AC temp for a few hours during heavy demand)

That looks cracking, but my bill says "Essex Power Lines" so I guess that's not me? I have no idea how this stuff gets to my house or who brings me it

Quite often local utilities have a parallel program (as they are all getting the funding from the governement anyway.)

Worth the local call to find out perhaps? or maybe they have a website.

Yay! The lazy gits close at 4pm but I'll get onto it tomorrow morning.

You're a star for highlighting that, thank you
