Default Health Insurance

Hello guys,

Need your advice.

I plan to move to Canada in February/March 2014 on a PR visa.

I was wondering if I should have health insurance taken out before I arrive or is there no need at all?

Is it true that health care is free in Canada and does that apply for me who is on a PR visa?

I plan to live in either BC or Alberta (depending on where I get work).

Thanks for this information,
Louise Mc Namara

BC has a waiting period of the balance of the month in which you arrive + 2 months. During that period you have to fund it yourself or have insurance.
Prescriptions are pay as you go until you reach the deductible, Your register with MSP for medical and Pharmacare for prescriptions. This can be done online, by phone or in person at any service BC office (where you register for SIN and drivers license).

It i snot free, you pay a monthly premium depending on how many in the family. Low income can apply for premium assistance.

No need to have it prior to arrival.

In Alberta, it is free and one can obtain it the day one arrives if arriving as a PR. Not all things are covered. Here is a link to the necessary information: Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan

Lots of handy information in the wiki...

Whether you get coverage for the wait period (if one applies) depends on your risk tolerance. I would recommend it for the peace of mind as costs can be bankrupting but YMMV.

Just make sure you go with a reputable company that has a physical office, as opposed to a virtual one that you can't chase down.

There was a docu on CBC marketplace last week on a related matter for holidays
