Hi All,
We are moving to Calgary in 3 weeks, and we have a few questions. Does anyone know if our English TV's will work in Canada?
Also we are looking to move to the SW near 4th Street SW. anyone recommend any condo's to look at or if we moved a little further out then any really nice places to live?
Thanks in advance.
Graham

Hi Graham, and welcome to the forum.
I'm guessing they will not work. First of all, most of the electrical wiring in a Canadian house is 120 volts. That in itself is not an insurmountable problem, because you theoretically could use a voltage converter and a plug adapter. What is more problematic is the difference between the two countries' television formats -- PAL in the UK and NTSC in Canada.
There may, however, be merit in bringing a British TV set to Canada. Reasons include the ability to view British videotapes (played on a British VCR), British videogames, etc., that you may have in your family collection.
That is a difficult question to answer. I don't know your family circumstances, tastes, budget, etc., etc., etc. You really have to come and look for yourself. To get you started, here is the BE Wiki article on Residential Areas of Calgary. If you are specifically looking for a condo, Condos in Calgary comes highly recommended.

Hi elliottm and welcome to the forum.
We aren't moving to Calgary, but 3 weeks! Wow! How exciting that must feel! Good luck with the move and finding somewhere to live. There are many others on this forum that live in Calgary and many that have commented on different areas within the city limits.
Try doing a search using the above search tool, you might come up with some useful tips.
You'll find that this is a busy forum, with loads of daily addicts/contributors/visitors like my self!
We're like a community, and help each other out where possible. If you don't know many people in Calgary you might like to go to one of the meet ups as a way of meeting new like-minded, (??) people.
What will you be doing there? Have you immigrated via PR or work permit?
We are hoping to eventually get over there and are in the process of applying via the PR route, I have brothers on Van. Island.
Hope you settle in well.
Robin

Hi Robin
I am moving with my Work to live in Calgary. Also my Partner is Canadian so this is our first step in moving back to her homeland. our second step is that we have just sent our PR applicaiton in and it is expected to be recieved by the case processing centre today.
All very exciting, Really Can't wait. Would be def interested in meeting fellow Brits when we arrive so will keep an eye out on this great site.

Hi,
I'm Thinking that seeing as I can change the settings of my TV from PAL to NTSC, then the TV will work fine over in Canada and I would just need a Converter?

We brought our English TV with us and it is now in the basement together with our English X-box and other consoles, this is not connected to Canadian cable system. TVs are fairly cheap over here, so we equipped the rest of the house with Canadian ones, therefore, no problems with accepting the signal.
