We havent bothered with all that with our two born here, there seems no hurry, and unless they want to work in Europe when they grow up, we cant see any point spending all that money when a canadian passport will do just fine. If we ever move back to the UK then we will have to rethink.

This is DEFINITELY not true. There has been no change in the law in this respect.
HOWEVER, in some cases a child born to British parents is not automatically British at birth, and an application for registration is required. This MUST be done before age 18, if so.
An example is if the father is British born/naturalised and is not married to the mother, the mother is not UK born or naturalised, and the child was born before 1 July 2006. In that case, child must be registered as British before age 18 (it will be granted upon application, normally).
Other complications can arise if parents are British "by descent" and one particular type of registration has an age limit of 12 months.
Bottom line - NEVER assume your child is British (or any other nationality) unless he or she has been issued a full validity passport and/or a citizenship certificate.
