But you see I have been here so long I consider myself to be a cradle Canadian.

43 years has got to count for something.

Be careful on this one, I may be blowing smoke but I've heard that they have changed the UK citizenship laws and if you are entitled to a passport because you have British parents you must apply for it before you are 18. Otherwise your right to citizenship is taken away. That is worth looking into.

Has anyone else heard this or can confirm it? When ours arrives in January getting additional passports will no doubt be the last thing on our minds, but if there is a timeline then I want to make sure we have everything in order for he/she to get dual citizenship (I am native-born Canadian and HB is native-born English,, so there shouldn't be problems regarding baby's eligibility for either).

This is DEFINITELY not true. There has been no change in the law in this respect.

HOWEVER, in some cases a child born to British parents is not automatically British at birth, and an application for registration is required. This MUST be done before age 18, if so.

An example is if the father is British born/naturalised and is not married to the mother, the mother is not UK born or naturalised, and the child was born before 1 July 2006. In that case, child must be registered as British before age 18 (it will be granted upon application, normally).

Other complications can arise if parents are British "by descent" and one particular type of registration has an age limit of 12 months.

Bottom line - NEVER assume your child is British (or any other nationality) unless he or she has been issued a full validity passport and/or a citizenship certificate.
