Re: Happy with your first choice?

I moved to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in June 1987, and apart from a "corporate stint in Calgary (3 years, which I loved), I have been here all that time. In the past few years I have had a hankering for a move to a cheaper, sunnier location. I have looked very closely at the Philippines, Mexico, Morocco, and some of the Caribbean islands, but I still value Moose Jaw overall. Six weeks ago I compromised, and moved just 42km west, along highway #1 to the little village of Mortlach. I feel as though I have always lived here, and find the town to be very dynamic, forward-thinking and friendly. In fact there are loads of Brits here, and we call it "little Britain"! Many of the families are connected to Westcan trucking in Moose Jaw, but have decided that they want the country life. A lovely couple from Wales own the local country tea house, and it is my dream to open a little pub here, and it seems like I have a lot of support too!! This is truly a fabulous part of Canada, great for families, superb economy, and a more relaxed lifestyle. Would recommend it to anyone. Back in 2004 I took my first trip back to Britain and traveled through England, Ireland and Wales. Although it was a great holiday, I was very disappointed in what has become of the finest nation of people in the world. No longer recognizable, the very fabric of that great nation has been rent asunder by politicians. Sad, to say the very least, and cannot for one second, blame any of you for wanting out of there so badly. Best of luck to all you smart ones who are attempting the best move of your lives.

1st choice was Vancouver Island. Been here since sept 06, love it and will be staying here.

Have not visited many other places. Stayed in Calgary for a few days which was ok but not for me.

Stayed at Banff and loved it  would quite happily move there if i had to.

Happy in Calgary for now. It's great for the boys here, but maybe we would like to move somewhere quieter with more community feel in a few years, once they're established on their own.........

Our first choice was not entirely in our own hands. My migration coincided with Souvette's posting back to Canada. She got a posting to TO, with a bit of effort, but we could just as easily have gone to anywhere in Canada with a sizeable military unit. We ended up living in Oakville only because I visited TO not long before the move and saw the military housing we'd requested. That was not an attractive discovery. The only other military housing in the GTA is in Oakville. I nipped down there for a look and the request for a change was made next day.

I liked Oakville. She didn't much and hated TO. Too much commuting and a lack of francos. That's why we are where are now.

My first choice was Calgary and although I went as far as buying a place there, we never lived there. I'm glad, I don't think it would have suited us at all. I've done well with renting it, it was a lucky mistake ;)

Then came Winnipeg, which was a 2yr commitment - we'd have stayed on if it was right for us but it wasn't (although having said that, I think it would suit a lot more Brits than ever go there - if you can get past the forum jokes and take a look you'll see it's a very liveable city).

Now LaSalle/Windsor - not what either of us would have wanted or chosen, but on paper the perfect compromise and at a mere 1yr in, no complaints whatsoever, neither of us has exactly what we wanted but we both have easy access to it

Only been 10 months but very happy so far. Wouldn't want to say that we will stay here forever, but I'm reasonably sure if we move it will be for something different rather than because we are in anyway unhappy with this location.

Vancouver was my first choice, but we decided on Calgary in the end. The salaries and job prospects were better, for the industry that we are in. We had also previously both worked for oil companies in London.

We came without jobs so potential employment prospects was an important factor in making our decision. Once we achieved some Canadian work experience, we felt we could then make more of a planned move within the country if we felt like it.

This city has been very kind to us in the 2 years we have been here and living next to the mountains has been truly amazing. I love it!. But having said that I cannot see us staying in Calgary forever. If anything we could be heading south for a few years, but we will see. My husbands new job requires him to spend a lot of time in Colorado.

Anyway who knows, I am living one day at a time and loving the here and now.
