Its very hard to do a reccie when the province is caked in fog for a week. Boooooooo fog. It was like November! :curse:

Halifax area in particular can be bad for fog probably due to the harbour. Also of course NS is surrounded by water.

We had no fog up our way, just long hot sunny days . Now mozzies and blackfly, thats another story - I am a walking buffet. Gimmee midges any day :curse:

Ooh the black flies were a surprise... my wife had a bite on her head and back of her ear. We didnt realise they were so small. I thought they were like the huge ones in aussie.

Still, fog or no fog it was a nice place to visit. Sleemans honey brown's profits went up.

Blackflies can be a problem - their bites seem to bother me a lot more than mosquitoes. They should be going soon however someone here told me to avoid eating bananas during blackfly season - apparently it encourages them to bite you

They're still there ???? We rented a place on the water in Mount Uniake in May, and the person we rented off said that they are around from Mothers day to Fathers Day - that would suggest they should have disappeared about a month ago.............

They were still here in September last year (horrendous bug year) due to a combination of wet/hot/humid weather. I've seen hardly any this year.

Yip they are still here. I went out for a healthy walk early one evening and came back with 3 bites. Didn't even know I had been bitten until I noticed blood trickling down my neck One on my scalp and one on my arm. I react to the bites by swelling up. I even had swollen glands on the back of my neck cos I had 2 bites there.

Apparently the little bleeders will find that tiny patch that you forgot to apply the bug spray to. My Y-C-Do was bitten under his watch strap and on the back of his hand. Hand completely ballooned up.

Gonna go buy a CO2 mozzie/blackfly trap for sure to protect us around the garden - fingers crossed it'll do the trick.

Has anyone tried garlic capsules. I have heard that taking them regularly reduces the risk of being bitten. I would love to know if there is any truth in it.

Okay, I'm a bit concerned now. We are coming out next week and thought these little blighters would be long gone.

What do we spray or rub on to stop them biting? Need to get some quick. Does the mozzie spray that you get here work?

Only time we encounted them was on a dock near the town of Canning in northern NS. There were some toilets, well they were holes in the ground, i think thats what might of been attracting them. They are very very small like fruit flies. In a week we only had a couple of mozzie bites between us. Mind you i think they were lost in the fog.

Well perhaps you should go to Canadian Tire or HomeHarware and ask for a Zapper bat....they are great for when you are out walking or sitting around in the great out doors. They fry the little suckers. Right now we arenèt bothered by black flies, there are only a few around but the deer flies in the woods are unreal, they swarm your head looking for raw skin...so I carry my zapper bat and fry them! We had a porcupine in the garden last night.....wow do they ever stink when you kill them!

Hello, sorry to bother you all but this fly/bug/mozzy situation was not one i was aware of (call me stupid). We are doing a reccie to NS & NB in October, not really worried about the reccy but if we fall in love with the area just how bad is bug season. Cheers, Paul

Blimey, what sort of bat is it !!!

Well it looks like a tennis racket but has two double a batteries in it and you push a button to activitate it and zap the bug is fried!!! Great thing for walkers and anyone that spends lots of time out doors.

Bug season isnèt really as bad as we are talking about!!! We get mossies and alsorts of biting bugs but usually by late August they are starting to disappear. It really depends where you are going to live.
