Hi Again,
After my interview in London 2 weeks ago I finally got my offer...... Although I'm almost 30 and should be able to make my own decisions I wanted some advice first and being an orphan I've only really got my wife, Macy the dog and people on this board to ask for advice......!
I've been offered $105000 CND a year to work as a Senior Piping Designer for a company based in Calgary, now this is about £15K pounds more than I'm currently getting being based in the North East of England, but I am unsure of the level of tax I'll have to pay in Calgary? and the amount of rental I'll need to pay
The package itself seems good, I'll get 3 weeks holiday a year (well good by Canadian standards!) Business Class flights from the UK for me and my wife, 4 weeks paid accomodation with $75 CND per pay expenses and the company itself offers various savings and share schemes.....
Any advice or help and I'd be grateful - I've got approx 1 day to consider this offer so need to think fast!

I would say 15K more than you are on sounds good but then I live in UK and not calgary!!!!. I think taxes will be similar or less but not more (search on tax calculators here), I think it depends whether you ahve any equity but I think your 15K extra will more than pay any housing differential but it really depends upon your current housing costs! cars will be slightly cheaper I think and other things similar to UK.
I would say you would definately afford a better lifestyle with your offer than your current job- but its just a guess!!!! as I really have no iea of cost of living where you are and not much more of an idea in Clagary. See padthai's message from today
Look at mls and rentfaster and do a tax calculator

Work on 40% tax at that level - approax same as UK. However with price of petrol, cars etc. you are really looking at dollars for pounds i.e. it's just about the equivalent of earning 105k sterling. A man could be comfortable in Calgary earning that.....

quite comfortable (even in Vancouver).
My advise is that once you are settled in Calgary, start reading up about
Canadian tax shelters ie RRSP , Flow Through Shares and etc.
Just to keep more spending money and give less to the tax man.
I would say, take that job and enjoy your new life in Calgary.

Sounds like a great deal - they obviously want you. Bite their hand off - and enjoy your next chapter of your life. Wishing you all the best - and many congrats on the job offer anyway, a great ego boost, if nothing else !

Congratulations! I've just accepted an offer myself in an engineering consultancy based in Calgary, slightly less salary than yours with a great benefits package and around $20k relocation expenses. The jobs are definately about and depending on your profession, salaries are considerably better than the UK - and as ann m says, it's a great ego boost!!
When are you planning to get over to Calgary. PM me if you like!
