Is there any exception for citizens being out the country for a period of time?

If you are just coming to do a landing then returning back to the UK to live then no goods to follow list is required.
Once the list is produced then thats it so WHY have a list if not actually moving to Canada.
The GTF is for people who are moving to Canada as new Immigrants or Former Residents of Canada who are now moving back. depending which category you fall under there are different rules re GTF mainly the value of an item for taxable persons so its important to know which category you fall under.
A family could fall under both so CBSA will look at which category the goods should fall under so no taxes are paid.
These 2 links cover the different categories

Read the rules re how goods qualify ie use, ownership etc.

Our goods will now arrive in Canada ( we hope ) a couple of weeks before we do . Should we do anything to help them pass through customs and/or should we hand over a list when we arrive this time? We have our PR cards so in theory we don't need to speak to immigration this time but we don't want to cause any problem with the goods.

Have arrangements been made for the goods to be stored or cleared as you are not here?
Send a copy of the goods to follow list with the shipment or give one to the shipper to be passed onto the receiving agent.

Here is a tip to anyone reading this
Try to have any goods you are shipping arrive AFTER you do it makes things easier. If you send them before and you get hit with storage fees or Customs won't clear the goods then its your problem not CBSA or the shipper.

Thanks for the reply. The shipper has a list of all the contents and we also have a copy. Will this serve the same purpose?

The removal company (Hamiltons) have made arrangement for the goods to be cleared and if that goes according to plan there will not be any lengthy storage necessary in Canada.

It sounds like we've been naive here as they were confident that was all they needed so we just went with it. Should we hand over a copy of the new list when we arrive next time or should we leave it now?
