Default Goods to follow - dont forget to put any pets on the list

Hi

We landed in Toronto on 29th Oct and cleared immigration + customs, including declaring goods to follow. At no point had anyone (customs or pet shipping company) mentioned listing our pet as a goods to follow.

Anyway our dog flew into Ottawa last Weds and we were told by Air Canada Cargo to take the customs paper work to Canada Border Services to get the pet released. Canada Border Services asked to see our B4 form (goods to follow) and said we should have included her...they stated they have the right to demand taxes on her value if the dog is not on the list......thankfully the customs officer then said hey its 4.30 and stamped the paperwork to release hour dog without any money or goods to follow list :-)

The other lesson learnt is to check what name is on the cargo airway bill. Unknown to me the pet shipping company put my wife's name and customs would not release the dog to me....thankfully my wife was at Air Canada Cargo Office with friends so she could come to customs (had she not been at the airport the dog would have been stuck for the night).

Just thought i'd share our experience.

Cheers

JB

And thanks to you, am adding cat to the GTF list. Didn't think of me needing to do that for a TWP. Had completely slipped my mind.

Gosh this was a great tip. Thank you!

Did you use a specialist company to send your dog? Or did family members perhaps take it to the airport. I used a great company from the UK once when I was travelling to the Gulf, but now I'm in France, and not so sure but am just investigating all my options. I am planning to take our young cats and (hopefully) the two parakeets.

Wouldn't it be easy if a genie and a lamp arrived when one wanted to move house!

A dog (West Highland Terrier with luck) will be our Moving House present to our son.

Best of luck and I hope you are all settling down well! I am so jealous and wish it were us going too!
