I don't think Guelph has bad areas, it's just a matter of how rural/suburban/urban you want to be. There's a high school on Paisley St. with a banner outside claiming to be the area's most highly rated but rated by whom I don't know. I like the bit around St. George's park, old houses, lots of parks, walk to downtown.

An interesting part of Guelph is Carden St., near the station. If one strolls along there on a Friday lunchtime one is offered services that might make a re-enactor blush.

St Catharines to Guelph must be a long commute (104 km according to Google Maps) and in winter it won't be fun. Guelph has generally snowier winters and probably slightly cooler and drier summers thant St Catharines.

To me, I'd live in Guelph in a hearbeat compared to St Catharines.

The "Woolie" is a nice pub in downtown Guelph

Hi, we have lived in Guelph going on five years. We love it here and feel that it is a safe place to bring up our kids. Not sure what you are looking for in terms of property but there are sub-divisions all around the central core. I personally would avoid living in the downtown area but otherwise you have a lot of choice. Also check villages like Eden Mills, Rockwood. These form Guelph Eramosa are semi-rural and tend to offer property with a more space without being too far from Guelph. Your kids get bussed in to school in Guelph if you put them in the Catholic system. Fergus is also great but is another half an hour to the North of Guelph. Hope this helps.
