Hi there, I was just wondering if anyone has any experience of living/working in Golden, BC? My husband and I are moving out in June (
) and while I have a nursing job to go to, my husband has nothing! He is a geotechnical engineer, however he was hoping to do an apprenticeship in joinery. Has anyone on here ever worked/lived in Golden? Any help is much appreciated

Stayed over night there once and had a right hoot in one of their bars. It was all stetsons and country music. Great night we had and i hate country music!
best of luck

From: England

We live in Golden.
There are a number of English families there now, including the local hair salon, furniture store, recycling plant and several holiday home firms.
There is plenty of work, although you may have to be flexible in what you do.
There are numerous building firms and they seem to be busy and on the lookout for workers.
We are out there permanently in June, if you want we can keep in touch and answer what queries you may have.
If you're interested, get there quick, as local feeling is, the town is on the up and up.

thanks for the info peter! sounds as though golden is going to be a great place to move to. I dont think my husband should have too many difficulties in picking up work (famous last words!), but I may be in touch again with some more questions.

From: Wiltshire then Golden??

So glad I found this site! I'm originally from Cranbrook so have always wanted to move back to the mountains but didn't really want to settle back in Cranny. Hubby is English and we though Calgary was too big and decided on Golden as it's not too far from the 'big city' but really close to a lot of awesome scenery, not to mention skiing! Really excited to hear about the new resort being built in Revelstoke.
I plan to be out there in September this year with hubby joining me for good in a year. Currently looking into mortgages but will probably rent to begin with.

Bought a house 2.5 years ago and have been going through the immigration process ever since. A year after submitting the skilled worker application decided this was going to take too long so went the PNP route.
We arrived in November and I am working 7 days a week getting the business up and running. The business is a climbing gym and we hope to be open in June by which time the skilled worker application should be pretty much done and dusted!
There are quite a number of British here, as Peter said the recycling depot, hair salon, furniture store (http://www.kickinghorseinteriors.ca/), physiotherapist, some shops, lodges etc. A British couple are buying the cinema and another couple are moving in June to set up a new business.
To sum Golden up; it's a nice little community with more outdoor activities than you can wave a stick at! The ski hill is awesome and the town has everything you need for day-to-day living.
We have a pretty busy social life including many of the Brits as well as Canadians.
As far as work goes, you shouldn't have much of a problem finding it. I was picking up some supplies from the builder's merchant today and a guy at the counter was moaning that he couldn't find enough workers, he said he would take on anyone that could wield a hammer!
A British couple that are friends are thinking of selling their business which consists of 10 acres, a small hostel, apartment plus home located 5 minutes north of town. I think they would be looking for about $425,000 if anyone is interested....
That's all for now, be sure to drop me a line when you arrive!
Ian.

Hey Chops
Thanks for the reply. Thats great to hear about Golden. We already lived in Fernie for a few years and we loved it and Golden sounds very similar. My husband got construction work there easily and ended up being offered an apprenticeship but couldn't do it due to Human Resources not issueing a visa!! Now he's desperate to get back into carpentry so hopefully there will still be opportunities when we arrive. Other than his concerns about work we can't wait to arrive. I had my medical a month ago so we should hear very soon!!! Fernie was very much an outdoor town as well with really friendly locals all into the usual stuff-skiing, tubing, biking and bbq's!!! The ski hill there was the reason my husband came to Canada and he's frothing at the mouth with the thought of skiing Kicking Horse!! Good luck with the business and i'm sure we'll be in touch when we arrive.
